Stephenie’s Book of the Month for November

Posted on 17. Oct, 2008 by in Books, TwilightMOMS

Our Book of the Month for the month of November is going to be The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  Stephenie recently had this to say about The Hunger Games~

“People often ask me for reading suggestions, and I’m always happy to share because books are exciting things to me. My latest excitement is this: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was so obsessed with this book I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn’t have to stop reading. The story kept me up for several nights in a row, because even after I was finished, I just lay in bed wide awake thinking about it. I’ve been recommending it to total strangers in Target. And now to everyone who reads my website. The Hunger Games is amazing.”

Here is a brief synopsis of The Hunger Games that was posted on Suzanne Collins site-

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place.

The Hunger Games can be purchased HERE.  You can learn more about author Suzanne Collins and her other works HERE

Our discussion forums will open up November 1st so you better get reading!

For being targeted at a YA audience, this book is surprisingly brutal (in a good way). There is violence, murder, betrayal, and everything else inherent in a gladiatorial fight to the death. That said, “The Hunger Games” was absolutely riveting. Collins does not pull any punches in saving beloved characters from horror and pain, and she also occasionally pulls the rug out from under your feet. In true series preparation the ending ends on a cliffhanger, making me drool for book number two…

Ditto to the above. I haven’t been so sucked into a book (you know where you carry it around and read it for the 30 seconds while they are getting your order at the fast food place) since Twilight. Despite, or perhaps because of, the disturbing premise of the book it is a compelling read. I highly recommend it.
