Oh my! Well I guess I have to say that I’ve always envisioned Caius as older in age than the other vampires but I guess that doesn’t make sense. They should still look young. Oh well. I guess I’ll get used to it. I have no frame of reference for this actor so I can’t comment on his casting.

Looks good to me. I think he can be made to look sufficiently creepy.

I envision the Volturi older, however I thought they might cast the parts younger. I’m thinking he’ll do great. It’s hard not to be impressed after seeing him alongside the Deppster!

      That’s exactly what I was thinking. :)

I’m looking forward to seeing him in the movie….he looks eerily (sp?) like my husband when we were dating in high school, long hair and all. Hee hee.

According to the History of the vampires, no one over, like 20 can survive the change so, this goes along with that at least. I too pictured him as old and bald but, then refering back to the books, that makes no sense so, YOU GO BOY!!

Where exactly did you get this information about age limits? Carlisle and Esme are both over 20.

    • Eleni

      31. Mar, 2009

This history was not written into Stephenie’s books so I’m curious where you got this information especially since Carlisle at least is 30. I’m not sure about Esme since her story is that she had just lost her newborn baby and threw herself off a cliff. But she would have been in her 20s.

Ummm, wasn’t Carlisle around 26 or 27? that isn’t 20 or under. I’ve never heard that vampire history…..

Wow, not quite how I picture the Volturi, but I really think they doing a good job with the casting. I loved him in Sweeney Todd.

I pictured Caius MUCH MUCH Older. But thats just me.

  9. Christine

    30. Mar, 2009

Add me to the list that pictured him MUCH older. I’ll have to go back and read back on it because I thought the descriptions of him made him seem like he would be a lot older.

    30. Mar, 2009

I pictured him older too- not ancient old, just older.

  11. twinky

    30. Mar, 2009

Ummm.I guess I pictured Caius to be older as well. I guess I envisioned that he would like something like when Darth Vader took off his Vader mask. Freaky like that.

  12. Susan

    30. Mar, 2009

I completely pictured them older. Wasn’t Esme older than 20 then Carlisle changed her?

  13. RohansLullaby

    30. Mar, 2009

Yeah… I am on board with the age comments… I pictured him more adult and sinister. Hmmm.

His eyes look piercing and I can see him looking menacing and superior. I trust he can pull this off.

    30. Mar, 2009

I too envisioned him as older, I hope they don’t cast them all too young, as Jane, and the others are supposed to be much younger than them !!

Carlisle was 23 and Edward says that Esme is older than Carlisel.

    • Eleni

      31. Mar, 2009

Oh yeah. That’s right. But still that’s older than 20.

  17. Julie M.

    30. Mar, 2009

I think it will be fine. He will look so different in the movie. i trust what Summit is doing. The cast was perfect in Twilight and it will be in New Moon and the others.

  18. Dark-Angel

    30. Mar, 2009

Yeah i also envisioned Caius older, but i think thats just a reflection of how long he has lived, if u read over the descriptions of the Volturi no where does it say that they’re old. I think he’ll do a good job, he was good in supporting JD in Sweeny Todd. Also he’s not at all a big name (yet)

  19. rosewowie

    30. Mar, 2009

Why did everyone envision Caius as older just because his vampire age is several thousand years old?
He is almost exactly what I would have thought perfect for the role. Wasn’t expecting him to be 20 but more like 23. But this totally rocks!

  20. Jessica

    30. Mar, 2009

Not what I wanted at all. I always pictured the trio as looking older than Carlisle, I just think if they are all young like that they will seem bratty and not like actual powerful individuals. He looks so much closer to Dakota’s age, I’m hoping it’s a mistake and he’s actually playing Alec.

    • Jennifer

      30. Mar, 2009

I was thinking the same exact thing…this guy has to be Alec and it is just another media mixup!

  21. jblmom

    30. Mar, 2009

Esme was 26 when she was changed. As for the casting, I think I need to see all three Volturi before I know what I think!

  22. Debann

    30. Mar, 2009

I agree with everyone saying they envisioned him older, I always thought of him looking to be late 30s or so, not old, just older than 20ish. I actually don’t hope it’s wrong and he’s Alec because he is way too old for that part. Alec and Jane are suppose to be prepubescent .

  23. twija

    30. Mar, 2009

I think that they’ll do a great job at making him look like Caius. If my memory serves me right, the Volturi are old but that does’nt necessary mean that they look old. I believe that it’s said that their skin is like onion skin. So I guess they’ll be working with alot of makeup!!! Let’s see who else they cast. This ought to be interesting.

  24. Jayme

    30. Mar, 2009

He looks too boyish….In my head he was older than Carlisle when he became a vampire…..but everyone sees things differently I suppose. I hope they can pull the rest of the look of tho….foggy eyes and all…..

  25. Twilighter2212

    30. Mar, 2009

Wow i thought Caius would be older than that! I mean in the book you envision him to be older. Honestly Caius is also a mean character to so this kid looks so happy looking!

  26. CatCullen2

    30. Mar, 2009

I am most certain that Bella described Caius as looking older than the other vampires, that his skin was pale, and very thin like paper…she could tell he had been a vampire for a long time. The character Jane was described as childlike…so I didn’t imagine a preteen, but more of an older child…like maybe 9, 10 or something like that?? But oh well maybe it won’t matter…as both actors are talented for sure.

  27. sarah

    30. Mar, 2009

They totally should have gone with someone older. He looks too young and skinny. Oh well. I don’t think they can get the Volturi how WE envision them.

  28. michelle

    30. Mar, 2009

i think alot of people invisioned them older. maybe she meant he looked like they had been a vampire for a long time? ….i think he looks like a creepy vampire though :)

  29. merrybee

    30. Mar, 2009

I agree with Jayne…frome the books, I pictured that Caius, Aro, and Marcus were all the same age, or slightly older than Carlisle, at the point in time when Carlisle was changed. So this choice for me, doesn’t exactly fit what I had envisioned. I don’t doubt that he’s a good actor… just questioning the age… I hope they go with Marcus and Aro being somewhere closer to Peter Facinelli’s age, (or even older–think of the descriptions of their skin)…otherwise I will have a hard time buying into the Volturi.

  30. merrybee

    30. Mar, 2009

Oops, I meant to say I agree with Jayme (above). Also, I’m reading that some thought that Jane and Alec were young/prepubescent… but because of the descriptions in the book about the vampire-children who had to be eliminated, then I pictured Jane/Alec at about the age that Dakota Fanning LOOKs (not her real age)…somewhere in their mid-teens. Childlike, but not a child.

  31. BellaFiore

    30. Mar, 2009

I also pictured him a lot older looking. However, it seems he would have an immortal ageless-ness no matter how young ot old he was when turned.

Frankly, if they were going to pick a young guy he looks great. He looks sufficiently beautiful in an unique way, yet potentially very creepy.

  32. loveit

    30. Mar, 2009

He must have made an impression on the casting directors. I also felt the Volturi were older and domineering. He would make a good Alec though!

  33. holdingmyheart

    30. Mar, 2009

I saw him as older(I thought of Aro as the old vampire in underworld).

I did love him in Sweeny Todd though so I am excited to see him in New Moon.

  34. C

    30. Mar, 2009

Oh well, I thought he would be older. But maybe young looking and ancient looking at the same time will be more dramatic..

  35. Lelie

    30. Mar, 2009

I pictured the Volturi with young faces but old souls. I think Jamie will be a great Caius but I will hate to have to hate him. :o P Wonder who will be Aro? Now thoses are big shoes to fill!

The average life expectancy was 30 years of age 3000 years ago (and you can google that!), so the 3 ancients should look under 30 years of age . Their behaviour, however, is that of someone older, wiser and more cunning (lets hope they pick talented young actors as it mustn’t be easy to play someone 3000+ years old)!
This guy looks the part and certainly has the beauty. Good casting job I say (but have to wait to see his acting skills as I don’t know him).

    31. Mar, 2009

Humm. I think we “older” fans here need to remember that this is a teen-flick. And, while I hope it’s much better than Twilight was, it’s still a movie and book saga that has a fan base made up, mostly, of the younger generation (I think the 25+ fan population is quite small in comparison). So, it didn’t surprise me too much that they picked a young actor. I thought he should be in his mid-twenties – but, I am happy they picked someone who’s not too well known, but has proven himself to be quite good in what he has done. I think the casting choices have been great, so far. W/make-up and CGI, I think he’ll be portrayed really well.

    • Amy

      31. Mar, 2009

I totally disagree. I don’t think the Twilight saga is anymore a teen book than Star Wars was. It has universal themes that all ages seem to grasp onto. Maybe they aren’t as obvious and obsessive as the teen group is, but hello, how many dedicated twilight moms are out there? I think some things are universal. I think if you really want the answer on what age Caius was, you have to ask the author SM!

Amy, I was referring to the movie, not the book. I know the book has a YA “rating” but it doesn’t really have a YA feel. I love the book Saga (age 30+).

Summit, IMO, did intend for the movie series to be a teen flick- they proved that by bringing on an Indie director who has produced mostly teen flicks. I think they realize what they have their hands on now and NM will be much better – but, the young casting still didn’t surprise me.

I’d like to see the actual stats, if there are any, as to what the average age of movie viewers is – I’m willing to bet it’s 16 or 17. There are plenty of 13yo’s seeing and plenty of 25+y/o seeing it – but, it probably still averages out in the late teens. Therefore, I think the casting may have something to do w/target audience age, etc.

I think CW is going to be much less leisurely w/his directing and push the actors above and beyond their previous performances. He’s already proven that he cares about the make-up being done better and I think this actor’s make-up will reflect the “onion-like” skin just fine. Jamie has also proven himself as a talented actor and I think that is probably what is most important here.

he is excellent and his doing a good job while stand with deep, wow, summit really serious to pick up good cast..

No offense to him personally, this is just not the Caius from the books.

I actually read this new snipet yesterday and when I got home from work, I opened my New Moon and re-read the descriptions of the Volturi. I suppose with the wonders of makeup, they can make this young kid look “wise” or “older” or however we are all picturing them. These photos ARE without makeup, wig, etc. I bet his eyes are going to look fantastic with the Volturi contacts in, though. He definately has some interesting eyes. I, along with most of you, also pictured the Volturi as older, I am not sure why. The whole onion skin thing is throwing me off a bit here. I am not familiar with this guy as an actor, so I will be curious to see who the other Volturi end up being.

  41. Sini29

    31. Mar, 2009

He’s way to young to be Caius. I agree with you all, Alec’s roll will suit him better. He does look creepy though, like Natalie mentioned maybe after all the makeup he will look a little like we envisioned Caius to be. Hopefully they will pick older actors for Aro’s & Marcus’ roll. I predict this movie will be 10 times better than Twilight, even if those all those in the Volturi clan that get cast are young. No offense but the first movie was crappy and it looked bootlegged, but I still bought it …lol

  42. Vanessa

    31. Mar, 2009

No offense to Jamie but he DOES not fit the part! And even though this movie is aimed at teens, you can’t make all of the roles teen or “hearthrobs” . I envisioned members of the Volturi similiar to Victor of the Underworld movies. However, I agree with others that they may have been considerably younger and of course they are beautiful. Perhaps, casting someone closer in age to Carlisle would have worked much better. I am hoping that this is a rumor or a trick?? I think he’d make a GREAT Alec. Maybe that’s the role he will be playing and this news was just to throw us off?? I guess we’ll just have to get official confirmation from Summit.

I was hoping that they were going to go young for the Volturi roles…woo-hoo!

  44. Edwardbride

    31. Mar, 2009

Alright….anyone who has read the series can tell you without some good old Benjamin Button style aging superimposed on this actor, the way Caius is portrayed in the books is in no way reflected in the fresh faced actor who truly looks like he is Dakota Fanning’s older brother. Part of the amazing role of the Volturi is that they are the ‘mob bosses’ of the vampire world. It is going to be tough for this actor to be convincing as Caius. FYI, it isn’t too late to change him to Alec, he looks to be FANTASTIC as a vampire, but please don’t mess up the villians by casting someone not believable to the role… BTW we CARE about this storyline more than you all think!

I agree! He will be better as Alec more than Caius. But he really has this vampire look with his long hair and pale skin. He will do great…. He was good in Sweeny Todd!

Bella talks about his skin looking old and papery……..I pictures him MUCH OLDER.

  48. Goldeneyes

    04. Apr, 2009

I  pictured the Volturi young like Carlisle, but my minds eye pictures their skin like wrinkled wax paper, very fragile. I think Summit is doing a great job of casting. Although I did think they could have put a little more block buster effort into the Twilight movie. But that hasn’t stopped me from watching like a million times. LOL Can’t wait for New Moon

I think looking older and being older are 2 seperate things. He was TOTALLY spooky in Sweeney Todd. I am willing to give him a shot….so far the casting has been great, I am going to trust they know what they are doing
