EW.com has an article about the very postive response the casting of Michael Sheen has recieved. They explore the possibility that people who wouldn’t have normally seen New Moon will be seeing it now because of Michael’s role as Aro.
New Moon director Chris Weitz’s “aggressive” pursuit of actor Michael Sheen — best known for playing Tony Blair and David Frost in the Oscar-nominated films The Queen and Frost/Nixon, and the Lycan (or werewolf) Lucian in the Underword films — is a serious hit with fans. Casting him as Aro, leader of the Volturi, a coven of ancient vampires who police (and kill) those who threaten to reveal the secret of the immortals’ existence, shows that Weitz knows what interesting characters he’s got to work with.

i’m really excited about this casting. i think it will bring new viewers to the movie. it also gives me more confidence in the director as i can totally see him as aro! i know many were unhappy with dakota fanning being cast but i honestly think she’d be really good as jane too! i’m hoping these big stars being cast means they are extending the italy (therefore edward

Love the choice. He has the acting chops (If you have not seen “The Queen” rent it this weekend); yet he is not afraid to make mainstream choices as well, like the Underworld’s (could his Lucian have been any better? YUM). Bravo, Chris Weitz!! Now, show me your Felix, and if I likey, you will have me wrapped up!!!

I am SOOOOO excited about Michael Sheen being Aro… I absolutely LOVED him as Lucian… WOW. I am so excited!

I think this is a great choice and hopefully foreshadowing that ‘New Moon’ is going to be way better than ‘Twilight’.

I hope that Chris does a better job at bringing out the characters personalities in New Moon. Because thats what addicted me to the books in the first place. i have read them 30+ times and i stiil laugh, cry and yell at the characters in the books like i was reading the for the first time.. the first movie i was confused because Edward seemed so angry you never got to see the love he has for Bella. So Micheal Sheen please bring Aro’s personality into the movie.

Not really… he’s going to have to ‘bring it’ in New Moon. Not what I pictured at all. I have not seen any of his previous roles so at least he has a blank slate with me. I am excited for the movie… a wee bit anxious too… I want to be blown away this time.

I have liked him in everything that he has been in so far. He should make a good Aro. It will be interesting to see the entire cast list.

I could not be happier. I a big fan of the Underworld films and love him at Lucian. I just finished watching in The Queen as Tony Blair. Wow!!! he can play any role and make it come to life!!! I getting more and more excited to see New Moon!! You Rock Chris!!!

He WILL be amazing. But I agree with Amanda…Jamie Campbell Bower was a weird, unexpected and far too young choice, in my mind.

He’s perfect!!! I didn’t realize he was Lucian though from Underworld. To me that just makes him that much better! I love this choice! Even my mom approves!!! LOL

He seems like a good choice.. I did like him in Underworld and he was amazing in The Queen. But I guess like many people who love the books, I pictured someone quite different. I pictured someone more like Rutger Hauer as Aro. I look forward to New Moon.
