Twilight Research Project

Posted on 02. Apr, 2009 by AmyO in TwilightMOMS

Some of our fellow Twilighters are doing a research project on the Twilight phenomenon through the University of Missouri and they are asking for our help.  The survey will only take about 20 minutes of your time and by participating you are eligible for a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card ($$$ for more books-YAY!!!).  Here is the letter they sent- we hope you’ll give them a hand!

Hi TwilightMOMS!

We are a group of media researchers (and Twilight devotees) at the University of Missouri-Columbia who are interested in researching the cultural phenomenon known as Twilight. We invite you to participate in our Twilight Survey.

If you are 18 or older, you can take our survey through this link: www.surveymonkey.com/twilightadults .

If you are under 18, you will need to ask the permission of your parent or guardian, and s/he will be sent a code via email that will allow you to enter the survey. Please ask your parent or guardian to email Elizabeth Behm-Morawitz at behmmorawitze@missouri.edu to give their consent for you to participate and to receive the code. Once you have the code, you can take our survey through this link: www.surveymonkey.com/twilightteens .

To repay your favor of filling out our survey, we will enter you into a lottery to win one of three $50 Amazon gift cards. At the end of our data collection, we will randomly select three participants to win the gift card.

On the survey, you will be asked to answer questions about your personality, relationship history, your interpretation of the characters and relationships in the Twilight saga, your fan activities, and your basic demographics. The entire survey should take about 20 minutes or so to complete. Your participation is voluntary, and you are free to withdraw at any time.

The risks to participating in this research study are expected to be no greater than those encountered in ordinary, everyday life. In fact, you have likely talked about the topics we will ask you about with your friends or in online discussion forums. The benefits to participating in this research study include the opportunity to get exposure to the research process and to take part in an academic study that will contribute to the understanding of fans’ connection to Twilight.

The data from this study will be kept anonymous. Your personal information, including your name, will not be connected to the data you provide, unless you indicate at the end of the survey that you would be willing to be interviewed over the phone or in person. Interviews will be conducted at a later date.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the study, please contact us at aubreyj@missouri.edu. If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant, contact University of Missouri Campus Institutional Review Board at (573) 882-9585.

Thanks for your consideration!

I did this the other day, it is painful. :)

I just did this and I think I sounded a little hard on Edward and Bella. I love their story, but I had to be honest about their relationship. Before I did this survey I had not really thought to compare their relationship to the kind of relationship I want. And to top it all, it turns out I like the kind of relationship that Alice and Jasper have much more.

I just did it. I think most people would sound kind of hard on Bella and Edward’s relationship, if it was a relationship between two people and not a vampire and a person it would be kinda creepy and not healthy. I found I want a relationship more like Alice and Jasper’s as well, but I’ve know that since the first time I read the books.

Its funny, I just did it too and I figured I would be Edward and Bella all the way, and then when i really actually thought about it…I ended up comparing the type of relationship that I want (and pretty muh have) to Bella and Jacob’s…interesting…

I took it. LOL I’m sure they’re going to get a kick out of everyone’s responses.

You don’t want to know the three words I used for Jessica and Mike’s relationship, hahaha.

I chose Jasper/Alice for the kind of relationship I would want, as well.

The survey highlighted a couple things for me:
    A. The books make me wish I was young again. Not that I’m old (32) but you know what I mean.
    B. I loved Jacob/Bella and I think they’re relationship is pretty much the relationship I have with my husband. (Minus the gorgeous russet brown skin). The big king handsome funny man who’s easy to love and would do anything for his love.

I have to agree with Jujita I think my relationship with my husband is similar to Jacob/Bella. Although he treats me with respect and protection of Edward and Bella. He even accepts that I am eternally clumsy! (Tells me often that I could find a way to hurt myself in a padded room. – He’s right. LOL)

Leave PLENTY of time to do it. I was rushed when I took it (my son had a dentist appt.) Now I wish I could go back an re-do a couple of my responses.
    Oh well…

I’d like to see the results. I took it, and it’s pretty long. What did people say about the 3 words that describe Edward and Bella’s relationship?

I was happy to do the survey. I hope we get to see the stats on TMs once the survey is complete.
I was reading some of the previous comments and discovered that they too chose the relationship that Jasper and Alice have .
I had never thought of what kind of relationship I would wnat before. When my husband read the series he saw himself as a cross between Jasper and Edward. I think he’s right.

Oh my God. I just found this site! There are other Edward crazed moms in the world. I’m late to these Twilight books. I feel like I’ve become obsessed. I’ll participate in this survey. In my googling I found a very good article about “Mothers in Love with Edward Cullen” by a writer named Melissa Stanton. Her piece is on momscape.com and at her own blog reallifesupportformoms.blogspot.com.

I took it a few days ago and it was fun. I too prefer Alice and Jaspers relationship. But I hadn’t relaized that until I had to answer direct questions. My kids enjoyed it too.

    LOL
    I’m with you Terri.
    I’m eternally clumsy!

You know I must admit I sooo curious – what about Alice and Jasper’s relationship did so many relate to?

I just finished the survey also. And I also chose Alice and Jasper. Regarding their relationship – Alice is so peaceful in the relationship (not sure if that is the right word), and is patient with Jasper. Together they risk everything including their own lives to save the lives of all the ones they love, and they do it together.
I liked the intensity of Rose and Emmett, and that appeals to my more animal nature :) , but Alice and Jasper won out for overall.

It was a great and wonderful opportunity to participate in the Twilight Research Project. I trully enjoyed the questions. While answering the question, some were very challenging. I could not help but smile with joy, be sad, and get angry at memories of what brought my husband and I to celebrate 21 years together.

I just sent an e-mail to get an access the code for my teen daughter to take the survey-just like me, my daughter is a HUGE Twilight fan. I am looking forward to get her reaction on the survey.
