David Slade addresses Twilight comments

Posted on 05. May, 2009 by in News

Twilight Lexicon received this email from David Slade in regards to his comments about Twilight-

“Dear Laura and Lori

I would be grateful if you could distribute this statement to the fans of Twilight:I would like to address some statements that I made regarding Twilight.

When I made these comments, I had neither seen the film nor read the books. I was promoting a comedy short film that I had made for Xbox and every pop culture subject was seen as a possible comedy target. I was being silly and none of the statements were from the heart.

Of course, I have since seen the movie and read the books and was quickly consumed with the rich storytelling and the beautifully honest characters that Stephenie Meyer created.

I would like to reassure everyone involved that I am invested in making the best film that I am humanly capable of, and that I am acutely aware of the power of the original books we serve.

Please be rest assured this statement is absolutely from the heart.

yours sincerely

DAVID SLADE”

I’m glad that he responded so quickly and offered some context for his comments, which now are understandable to me. If it’s from the heart, then it’s good! I am wishing him the best of luck!

Wow… you know, I think we’ve all said things in the past we wish we could take back, or judgements we’ve made about things we didn’t understand and that’s fair. Back-peddling is embarrassing, so I’ll give him kudos for attempting it instead of just trying to ignore it.

Having said that, when I find myself or someone else in the predicament – you never know whether to believe the apology. Here’s hoping that if nothing else, this “awareness” he has just translates to a really awesome version of the book! :)

I sure hope so. I was utterly dismayed when I heard his comments.
I guess I’m skeptical but I wonder if this retraction is for PR or the real deal.

I love it when grown men have to say sorry. It’s good for their image.

Oh, yeah. Right. What was I thinking? It was all a joke and besides you hadn’t read the books nor seen the film, and that made it just fine to be callous and rude in public. So someone at Summit heard the screams and told you to apologize pronto. Actually that wasn’t an apology. It was an excuse, as far as I can tell. And what’s this about the “rich storytelling and the beautifully honest characters”? Please. Actions speak louder than words, Slade. “We’ll be watching.”

Thanks but no thanks! He should loose the opportunity to direct Eclipse. He was offensive to Stephenie & Catherine’s art and my loyalities remain to them. If he wasn’t smart enough to keep his mouth shut, is he smart enough to capture the intensity and delight of Eclipse? Summit, you can do better by the fans than this.

I think everyone has bad days, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and people make mistakes with what they say or write. I am impressed that he wrote about that and I am looking forward to what he brings to Eclipse, especially what the newborns will look like. I wondering if he will change how Volterra look from New Moon or any of the charactors for a more harder look to them as Vampires or keep it the same?
