Film.com: When Movie Franchises Change Directors
Posted on 03. May, 2009 by JulieAndJasper in News
Film.com has an article reviewing movie franchises who have had director changes that have been for better – or for worse. The list of movies in the article was interesting and I learned a few things I didn’t know before. For example, did you know The Empire Strikes Back (my personal favorite in the first three movies) wasn’t directed by George Lucas?I had no idea.
And they have a reassuring view of the changes in directors for New Moon and Eclipse.
Director Catherine Hardwicke was replaced by Chris Weitz for the first sequel, New Moon, and now it’s just been announced that part three, Eclipse, will have yet another director. His name is David Slade, and he’s actually a good fit: His last film was 30 Days of Night, which was about vampires, and his film before that was Hard Candy, which was about a teenage girl being stalked and preyed upon by a much older man. Combine the two of those and you’ve basically got Twilight.
The article is a good read for even the most casual movie fans, and puts the whole Catherine-Chris-Ridley thing into some movie context and persepctive.

Yuck, don’t think its a good match. Twilight / Eclipse is not a slasher horror movie.

It all depends on if the director gets the feeling of the story and its characters. Joel Shumacher made Batman cheesy and laughable, which Batman would kick his butt for doing. What Sam Raimi did in Spiderman 3 was try and throw too many people/emotions/plots at the audience. Peter Jackson made LOTR all at once so it feels the same all the way through (smart!). Start Wars, Terminator, Alien….all these franchises are HUGE and have had different directors. As far as the Twilight franchise goes…I saw The Golden Compass and hated it. Watched about 15 minutes of it. I hope Weitz does better with New Moon. I don’t know who David Slade is and I don’t care if he’s done a vampire movie. It doesn’t make him qualified for another “vampire” movie. So we’ll see with these two new guys what they do to our beloved saga. It will be us who decides if it’s good or not:)
