Statement from Summit Entertainment regarding Rachelle Lefevre

Posted on 29. Jul, 2009 by in News

We have just recieved the following statement from Summit Entertainment-

We at Summit Entertainment are disappointed by Rachelle Lefevre’s recent comments which attempt to make her career choices the fault of the Studio.  Her decision to discuss her version of the scheduling challenges publicly has forced the Studio to set the record straight and correct the facts.

  • Ms. Lefevre’s representatives were advised as early as April that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE was expected to start shooting in early August.
  • If Ms. Lefevre was, as she describes “passionate,” about being part of THE TWILIGHT SAGA, we feel that she and her representatives would have included us in her decision to work on another film that would conflict with the shooting schedule of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE.
  • It was not until July 20th that Summit was first informed of Ms. Lefevre’s commitment to BARNEY’S VERSION, a commitment we have since been advised she accepted in early June.  Summit had acted in good faith that she would be available to fulfill her obligations both in terms of rehearsals and shooting availability for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE. We feel that her choice to withhold her scheduling conflict information from us can be viewed as a lack of cooperative spirit which affected the entire production.
  • Furthermore Ms. Lefevre took a role in the other film that places her in Europe during the required rehearsal time, and at least ten days of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE’s principal photography.  This period is essential for both rehearsal time with the cast, and for filming at key locations that are only available during the initial part of production.
  • Contrary to Ms. Lefevre’s statement, it is simply untrue that the Studio dismissed her over a ten day overlap.  It is not about a ten day overlap, but instead about the fact that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE is an ensemble production that has to accommodate the schedules of numerous actors while respecting the established creative vision of the filmmaker and most importantly the story.

The fact remains that Ms. Lefevre’s commitment to the other project – which she chose to withhold from Summit until the last possible moment – makes her unfortunately unavailable to perform the role of Victoria in THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE.

Still think they could have worked something out. Bad decision making by Summit. She is one of the biggest parts of Eclipse. They need to try and make it work.

I think we are all very emotional about this because we are so linked and invested in this series. I believe both sides because they are both saying the same thing when you strip all of the accusations. There WAS a scheduling conflict. Motivations aside who among us really knows what it takes to make a movie in such a short, constrained time schedule?

This decision doesn’t change the way I feel about the material and I’m still going to see all of the movies!

I too feel very bad for Rachelle because I worry that this episode will affect her future ability to get jobs. But as adults we make our decisions and we need to stand by them. That goes for Summit as well as Rachelle.

      Sorry for being so preachy!

Sorry Summit, not buying. Having belatedly realized what a massive fanbase Twilight has, the powers that be in Hollywood are doing what they can to capitalize on it, and that includes forcing a role for the daughter of a powerful film director in the movie version of Eclipse. (Remember the female director that made the first Twilight movie on a very limited budget was not given the chance to make the second one – it went to a more high profile male director once Summit realized how massive the series would be).

Rachelle very successfully played the role of Victoria in the first movie, a movie that launched an incredibly popular franchise. There was no reason to replace her. It boggles the mind to think that Rachelle would risk the role of her career. And unfortunately her attempt to defend herself will blacklist her.

Compared to the perpetually petulant Kristen Stewart, Rachelle was a ray of sunshine in the Twilight promotions. She will be sorely missed in the movie and in the Twilight promotions.

I was vaguely aware of Bryce Howard before – now instead of having the opportunity to learn to enjoy her in movie roles she earned I will always think of her now as Daddy’s little girl.

Completely agree with ‘Don’t believe it” So what’s next if Robert isn’t out of NYC on time will he be next?? This is ridiculous. Rachelle is Victoria!!! The most enthusiastic of all the cast ! Something just doesn’t smell right… Must be the humans!!! Summit don’t bite the hand that feeds!!!!

Another thought. Summit could learn a thing or two from Warner Brothers, they work with many big names stars who have schedules yet they seem to make it work.

WOW they seem angry. Feeling the heat?Rachelle is human. However, she’s also has been very committed and loyal to her fans and Twilight.I choose to believe….RACHELLE!

10 days out of 3 months makes a difference??? Sounds like a load of garbage to me. Summit has handled this franchise badly from the beginning. They are a fledgling company with little experience. I hope it works out, but my faith in Summit makes me think otherwise.

I’m very disappointed in Summit’s decision to let Rachelle go. I too believe Rachelle’s side of the story. Summit will regret this choice if they don’t work something out with Rachelle.

I just feel so sad for Rachelle. What a nightmare! I wish we could rewind and get a do over. It was not very nice (putting it mildly) for Summit to blast this statement out at Rachelle. To say they had to put out this statement because of what she said is ridiculous. They could have said “we’re sorry she feels that way” or whatever. ARRGGG!
It makes me think they are trying to make themselves as a company look good at the expense of one young actor.

    Sending love Rachelle’s way!

Twinky – I by no means meant to offend you in any way. It was a simple reference to the ‘back and forth’ banter between Rachelle and Summit. I wanted to relay my anticipation that this banter would end and we could go back to focusing on the movies. I certainly hope your sensitive nature benefits you in more intimate settings as much as it does in online blogs. (wink)

Ok, so she did get the boot. She defended herself, after a very hurtful and unfair desicion made by the studio, and now they want to beat her with a stick too?! I agree with all the comments, this franchise is going down hill. Twilight was not the best, but it was enough, to quench the Twilight thirst. I’m sure New Moon will be “better”still, the franchise is looking so sloopy to me. So, cut and paste! WHY?! I was so excited for NM and now, it has turned me a little off. I mean, switching directors, replacing actors, even the look of the film is so different from the first one! Summit needs to recover Rachelle or people will lose interest before BD. They are looking like such beginners! I know it’s a new studio and what not, but some of the decisions they are making are so dumb! I wanted Twilight to go along with the the LOTR and HP! those are good! The Twilight franchise will end up being a joke if the continue this way! it’s going to look like the poors man book to movie franchise!

Just seems wrong. As much passion and enthusiasm as she has demonstrated in the different fan appearances/events it just seems unlikely that she took herself out of the series due to a scheduling conflict. Very much seems like a bad decision by a studio that thinks it can get away with a little more than it should. Very disappointed in them and their tactics. I think other fans will be too. I support Rachelle.

You know, Rachelle could have chosen Eclipse over the other movie. She could have agreed to show up for the movie she’d already committed to. I don’t think Summit was probably in a hurry to replace her. It would have been easier and probably less expensive (I imagine Bryce Dallas Howard is a few pay grades above Rachelle) to keep her. I’ll bet they wanted the continuity–it only makes sense. But what if changing the schedule now would mean that Kristen or Rob would have to bow out of another film? Are they going to choose Rachelle over the principles? I don’t think people are being fair to Summit. They could have said this about her in their first release, but they tried to keep it amicable. They only put this out after she tried to blame it all on them.

    • mzkmaker

      29. Jul, 2009

You might have a point…hard to know the whole story, but I still feel it is sad and unfortunate to have the same character for 2 films and change for the climax of that character’s story…I still have never gotten over Dumbledore being replaced and there was no choice in that situation…

      30. Jul, 2009

I have to agree…. it’s sad that Rachelle isn’t reprising the role, but those of us not in the movie business do not know all the legalities when it comes to production. It’s easy to blame Summit, but it’s probably not too fair not knowing everything involved. Either way, I think Howard has some big shoes to fill and I hope the fans give her a chance…. although I’m disappointed myself that Rachelle won’t be in Eclipse, especially given how big her role is in Eclipse.

    • Carin

      31. Jul, 2009

Are you serious? Stewart, Pattison, Lutz and Green all did movies while on hiatus. Lautner is doing one now. Nothing in their contracts says they cannot work on other projects. From what I’ve read on other blogs, Summit had no problem with Rachelle signing up for the other movie. So why suddenly have a problem with 10 days of filming in a 3 month schedule? I’d say pressure from Howard’s Daddy and $$. So you figure Howard is a few pay grades up from Rachelle? Well according to Marc Malkin, he figures Howard would take the pay cut considering she’s walking into a ready-made role in the biggest franchise around. Your comment regarding changing the schedule and choosing Rachelle over the principals doesn’t make sense. They filmed Cam Gigante’s role first so that he could go to his next assignment – NOT that’s I’m suggesting filming anything on a different schedule. My opinion, Summit wanted Rachelle out for some reason. Probably money, as she apparently got a good size pay raise and they could get Howard (a supposed big name) for cheap because of the craziness that is Twilight. You can’t tell me that this was a surprise, out of nowhere blow to Summit like they seem to be indicating. Please, you don’t really believe that Summit found out about Rachelle’s “conflict” on July 20 and have Howard signed up that fast without having already been in contract negotiations, etc with her, do you? Hollywood may be make believe, but lawyers, meetings and contract negotiations are not. These things don’t happen in 3-4 days, I don’t care HOW big the Twilight Series is. I just hope Summit pulls its head out and get Rachelle back.

    29. Jul, 2009

I feel like the fabric of the story told through these movies will suffer a large tear without the continuity of Rachelle as Victoria…regardless of whose in the right, it is too sad to see this happen to Rachelle and the Twilight Saga films!

I have to disagree…. Take a deep breath everyone. Remember how upset everyone was when Catherine was replaced???? It will all be good… It will all work out and be great. Not to mention… Bryce Dallas Howard is an excellent actress.

    • Kingslady

      30. Jul, 2009

Yes, I am sure Bryce will do a good job. That is not the point. What they did to Rachelle was not right.

  17. Mrs. B

    29. Jul, 2009

Wow…I think that she spoke honestly but definately not vindictively. I have heard much worse from other actresses. I mean, what is the woman supposed to do, not work until Eclipse is over? I really hope that she does well in her career. I know I will continue to support her. I just really hope that Summit starts to kick it up from here. They really have no excuse. The stories are well written, the writter is quit involved and the fan base is massive. They were basically handed the Golden Ticket…

  18. Spidermonkey

    29. Jul, 2009

I think this is nothing but corporate BS. So how did they manage to replace her in 8 days? And would Rachelle have knowingly put herself in a position where she might have a conflict with maintaining her role in one of the biggest film series these days? I think not. Re-read her statement. Given the choice, she would have undoubtedly chosen Twilight. Except she wasn’t given the chance to make the choice. They already knew what they were going to do.

    29. Jul, 2009

Wow! You guys (commenters), seem to have become experts overnight on this subject. Very judgemental too, I might add. You seem to be able to read the minds of all involved in these discisions, and know better than them what the best thing to do is. Poor Bryce gets crucified by you for simply taking a job that is offered to her? And what’s your problem with the director? You haven’t even seen his try at this yet. He also merely took a job that was offered to him. This is business people! Stop being armchair quarterbacks and sit back and enjoy the entertainment that movies are created for.

    • Sarah

      30. Jul, 2009

Well, you are being judgmental as well, my friend. You are judging everyone else on this board who made a comment in contrast to your own opinion. The reason for these comment areas is for people to COMMENT. Rachelle has been an avid supporter and promoter of the series since the beginning. She was a great Victoria, and I think it’s nice she was an unknown. People have a vested interest in her and want to express their disappointment with the situation. Is there something wrong with that?

      • Heidi

        30. Jul, 2009

You criticize me for doing what you say everyone else has a right to do? The above was MY opinion on the thread. I didn’t say anything about Rachelle not being a great Victoria. I loved her in the role and I am disappointed that she won’t be in the film in which Victoria gets to shine. That’s how you express disappointment in the “situation”. Not by placing blame on one side or the other. I only meant that we as spectators aren’t privilaged to know what goes on behind closed doors.

As a fan base, we are the consumers of the franchise. If you like me, feel a moral obligation to ensure Summit practices good ethical treatment of the actors and employees, then a proactive approach starts with voicing your opinions, and closing your wallet. Rachelle is a fan of the series, and a good person who was, seemingly replaced by the corporate machine without effort for compromise. I would consider that a Hostile workplace. They re-worked schedules for other actors, Jackson and Cam. Why not her? She didn’t know this at comic-con. They replaced her and in a very unfortunate way. She has every right to be peeved. She responded her words (not the commentator spins in a professional way. The studio, Summit, responded in a very caustic and rude way. I can’t support that. I will be missing Eclipse. So will my kiddos

    29. Jul, 2009

Rachelle has been so incredibly loyal to her fans, and we, as fans, are obviously loyal, however, I personally draw the line at mid-franchise casting changes. Summit – wake up and grow up. This reeks of Summit trying to get a big name in there, so they hire the big names daughter! Yes, I’m being harsh, but deservedly so. Bryce is a fine actress, but she is NOT Victoria. Ten measly days is what the fight is over? Please – Summit, rethink this…your loyal fans are speaking out in hopes you will listen. We love our Twi books, we love our Twi websites and we love our Twi movies…don’t make changes so quickly without even the consideration of the fans who are so devoted.

    30. Jul, 2009

This is my first comment on the site, so I am sorry to be posting on such a hotly debated issue. But one thing that struck me when Bryce Dallas Howard was named as Rachelle’s replacement was an interview I remember reading about Rob at the Academy Awards. He went to the Vanity Fair after parties and one of the celebs that came over to him to say how much they admired his work and Twilight was RON HOWARD! So serendipitous that his daughter now has a part in the franchise (not to allude AT ALL to Rob having any part in this… only that Howard was expressing an interest in Twilight months ago!!)

I am exceedingly sad to see Rachelle go… not only because it’s very distracting to have a character removed from the series (even more so than the director, because we relate to and picture THAT person as the character) but also because in every single interview and panel I’ve seen her on (and I’ve looked at many) she is SO very enthusiastic about Twilight. She seems to be as much of a fan girl as all the rest of us. I think she believed the very short shoot on this other movie would not be a problem, but if Summit was resolved to recast the role, they probably looked for any little excuse to get rid of her! I’m so sad this has to put a blemish on the remaining movies AND the franchise!!

  24. Lexie

    30. Jul, 2009

Based on the statement of both parties, maybe it was a failure to communicate on both sides but still sounds like a lame zero tolerance excuse on Summit’s part. Knowing how popular Rachelle is with fans, some effort should have been made to work things out between the two parties. This is not just some exec decision that affects only Rachelle. It’s inconsiderate and almost disrespectful to the fans and it doesn’t sound like there was much goodwill extended to work things out. It doesn’t even sound like she was given a choice to try to get out of the other film.

This just seems very fishy to me. They had to have been planning this to do auditions and rehire…they could have easily given Rachelle the option but didn’t. They kept it quiet because they know they’d get an uproar like they did with Taylor. It is very sad and I’m very disappointed! Hopefully they will reconsider, but I doubt it.

    30. Jul, 2009

As a loyal Twilight fan I am very disappointed in the way that Summit handled this, and I hope they will be smart enough, to re-negotiate with Rachelle to bring her back as Victoria in Eclipse. She has been nothing but wonderful, not ony in her portrayal of Victoria, but in her participation in all of the marketing and promotion for the series. She has always been positive and upbeat, and truly enjoyable to watch.

It seems that the powers-that-be at Summit have underestimated just how loyal Rachelle’s fanbase is, and have patronized us by assuming that we would just automatically embrace whomever they decided to use as her replacement.

No offense to Ms. Howard, but her choice reeks of nepotism and will make it difficult for me, as a fan, to accept her in the role. Everytime we see her we will be reminded of just how badly Summit treated Rachelle.

I hope Summit will come to their senses and do the right thing and bring Rachelle Lefevre back.

What a sad attempt to lure daddy Ron Howard. Consistency of the character has now been destroyed! Disgusting! I bet Stephenie M is not happy about what they have done! Changing a director is one thing but having an author’s portrayal of a character change?!? And they waited till after Comic Con to drop this bomb? Thanks a lot Summit for ruining Eclipse before production even starts!! Heres an online petition if you want to have your opinion count:

I wrote all of the executives from Summit an email expressing my disappointment & the fact that they should reconsider this decision. I agree with each & everyone of you. I’m so upset, over 10 days. You have got to be kidding me, this is ridiculous. Wow Hollywood can’t seem to work around 10 days or just start 10days later after she has completed her other commitment. They are making this SAGA go down hill, not only by switching the directors but now members of the cast, this is awful… :(

  31. Aggravated 2

    30. Jul, 2009

I agree with a lot of other people. I dont like how Summit is handling all this with changing directors for what seems like it will be for all four movies and then trying to switch out Jacob and now Victoria. It is going downhill and I am worried. We all love this series so much we dont want it to become a joke. As you all know, some make fun of us already due to loving Twilight, I just dont want Summit or anyone to make it worse. I wanted Twilight to go down in ‘history’ as great as HP and LOTR too.

  32. Aggravated 2

    30. Jul, 2009

I agree as well that this changing of Victoria really puts a damper on the entire series. We now see Rachelle as Victoria so it will be hard to see someone else portray her. Especially since it is kinda funny how they didnt wait until after comic con and wait to get rid of her in the movie that Victoria is such a big part in. It may really have been non communication on both sides about schedules but don’t you think, knowing how vested all of us are in the series that Summit would try hard to fix this and not just said, ‘oh well ur gone…period!.’ Now every time I see Bryce I’m gonna see red and remember how horrible this whole situation was. I kinda feel bad for Bryce too..there’s gonna big a big backlash and I dont think many will accept her as Victoria. But thats just me and i’m a little upset at Summit right now.

    ” lack of cooperative spirit”

  39. Jerseyette

    30. Jul, 2009

From what I understand, internet petitions aren’t taken very seriously because they’re considered bogus. Most of the time, anyone can sign multiple times. What works best is good, old-fashioned snail mail. If Summit gets deluged with letters and postcards protesting Rachelle’s firing, they may pay attention.

That said, what will DEFINITELY make Summit pay attention is if everyone boycotts “Eclipse” — admittedly, a tough thing for us to do, no matter how much we love Rachelle. Money talks, and making less of it on the third film in this franchise will show Summit how strongly we feel about the casting. (And perhaps it would help avert any other bad decisions like this.) I hope it doesn’t go that far, and they allow Rachelle back in the role, but they’ve probably committed to Bryce Dallas Howard. Any way you look at this, Summit will have a lawsuit on their hands.

Hello people! It was unprofessional for her to sign up for another project knowing it would overlap with the franchise that made her famous in the first place! Don’t get me wrong, I loooove her as Victoria & I’m sad to hear that she will be replaced, but this IS a business & there are a lot of people involved! Rob, Kristen & the rest of the cast made other movie commitments based on the filming schedule of Eclipse, so it’s not like Summit can be expected to change the filming schedules of so many to accomidate one person who decided to make a foolish decission! I have known for quite some time when Eclipse would be filming, so what’s her excuse? If she’s going to breech a contract, it should not be with Summit….they are the ones who made HER famous!…Don’t bite the hand that feeds you Rachelle. BTW, Bryce Dallas Howard IS very tallented & has already established herself as an actress! I doubt she needed her “Daddy” for this one.

Suggestion to all. Petitions aren’t as effective as something physical that the studio can see in terms of numbers. That means letters or postcards would be effective. Emails would be the next most affective thing and then phone calls.

As for directors. It’s not a slight to Catherine Hardwicke or Chris Weitz to switch up directors. As the books progress so does the scope and direction of the story and the decision to have different directors with experience with different types of movies is not a bad thing. It’s about getting the look and feel of that particular book on film with a lot of good creative input.

And about Rachelle, I’m with TeamMeyer. I don’t care whose fault it is Summit needs to fix this. No need to trash Bryce (please) but it’s not what the fans signed up for and we are legion. LOL

Someone at Summit needs a time out.

The management team at Summitt never should have allowed themselves to react and then justify their reactions so publicly. Bad form.

Whoever wasn’t able to be levelheaded about things should have taken a step back for a second to gain perspective. They probably still should take a break before things really implode. This must be a stressful process – what kind of support are key decision makers getting?

    There’s a problem here folks.

Summitt you need to deal with this – don’t let it get bigger and either change your minds or don’t but either way you must stop making releases on this subject. You aren’t doing yourselves any favors. And for goodness sake find a way to work together. You’re half way there, don’t lose it now or your efforts will be superseded by a different production company. A movie or series can always be produced more than once – don’t you want your version to be the best? You deserve it, again – don’t blow it now.

I really think they should get rid of their reps and sit in a room together, with a calendar. I am very disappointed. Victoria is one of my favorite characters and I can not envision another actress playing her. I pity Bryce Dallas Howard a lot ; she’s probably made a mistake accepting the part. It could be a career breaker for her as opposed to the career maker it has been for Rachelle.

Reality flash here… business is business. They are both telling the same story so what it comes down to is Rachelle choose to sign another deal without consulting Summit, who she was contractualy obligated to. Even if it wasn’t intentional on her part (and I don’t think it was), she should have taken the personal responsiblity to check with Summit FIRST. It’s unfortunate, Rachelle will forever be Victoria to me too BUT, big picture here, she was responsible to Summit and the rest of the crew, she made her self unavailable to fullfill that responsibility. Summit isn’t a big company, they are not given flexability to work with so they can’t be flexable with Rachelle… that’s life, put on your big girl pants and deal with it.

You said it Sabs7. Rachelle will always be Victoria but she needed to fill her obligation. There are a lot of actors and other personnel working on this movie. It would be hard to have to rearrange everybody else’s schedule to accomodate hers. Every other actor has movie contracts too and seem to make this work.
Love Rachelle and will miss her greatly. I want her back because I don’t do change very well. So hopefully something will work out.

I’m not sure why they couldn’t figure the scheduling out. When they were shooting Twilight they had to shoot the scenes with Cam early because of a scheduling conflict. It just seems a little “harsh” to just replace Rachelle.

I mean this movie is all about Victoria. It’s her time to shine and she gets replaced? I don’t know I think they could have figured it out.

In her defense, everyone really should stop slandering Bryce just because she has a famous father. As a child of someone famous no accomplishment I make is EVER given credit. No matter how talented you are or how hard you work it will always be attributed to your relations. We do not know that Rachell was replaced for any reason other than the one she and Summit shared. I LOVE Rachelle and was thirlled to get to meet her. She is by far the most loving and open to the fans cast member involved in this series, but that does not mean Bryce is at fault or that she way placed here because of who she knows.

I’m really getting little weary of the “bite the hand that feeds you” remarks. It doesn’t make an ounce of sense that Rachelle would purposely do something to jeopardize her job and role in the move. I still think this is a break down in communications between the two parties. At least I hope that’s the case.

I seems like Rachelle thought everything was okay, otherwise she would have tried to fix things. The other cast seem to have gone on to do other projects while Twilight filming was going on. Was Rachelle given any warning, choice or ultimatum so she could try to get out of the other film?

I’m very well aware of the business aspect of things too and back-biting and back-stabbing go on all the time in business but that doesn’t make it right either. There are also mistakes made as well and mis-communications too. That’s why I would hate to think that Summit was just waiting for any excuse to can one of their cast in favor of a better known actress just to boost the box office of the 3rd film.

I’m a new fan to Twilight and all this stuff is just starting to make me lose interest.

Summit can fix this if they want to.

    Whats done is done.
Rachelle made her decision, shes a big girl.
    Summit then made their decision.
People need to stop hating on Bryce.
We should be welcoming her into our Twilight family!!

I believe there are other reasons that Summit has for wanting to replace Rachelle and they probably looked for one little crack in the glass to break her contract. I don’t understand their highly uncooperative attitude and their “under the radar”, blitzkrieg hiring of Howard.

As for Bryce, I did like her in both M. Knight movies, kind of didn’t pay attention to her in Spidey 3, but unfortunately I think by signing on, she just stepped into a very volatile situation. I do not think the majority of the fans will embrace her just because of the situation (unless Stephanie can pull some magic out like she did for Rob…) and I agree with others … even not meaning to, when I see her on screen as Victoria, I will have nothing but apathy and bad feelings for how Summit treated Rachelle. I won’t be able to focus on the performance.

Just sent emails and signed petition. Being an old movie buff, the studios would never force a change with a popular character in a series unless he or she became a nationwide pariah.
