I know that when you all see Blue October in the subject line of one of my blog posts you expect to see a gushing, fangirly post but this is not my normal Blue October post. This is so much more important than my silly fangirly gushing. Blue October has announced the tour dates for their Pick Up the Phone Tour. This is not an ordinary Blue October tour, this is a tour with a purpose above and beyond pure entertainment. The purpose of the Pick Up the Phone tour is to raise awareness for suicide prevention. The Pick Up the Phone tour is sponsored by 1-800-Suicide, To Write Love on Her Arms and PostSecret.
This article on Tonic.com explains the reason behind the tour and what they hope to accomplish.
Justin Furstenfeld, singer for Blue October and spokesperson for the Pick Up the Phone Tour, remarks, “It has taken 20 years to have the chance to do a tour focusing on mental health issues which have been a daily battle for me for most of my life. It’s great to finally be a part of a positive, progressive-thinking tour for an important cause which will make a direct impact and help people in desperate situations that need it the most.”
The tour hopes to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and to provide a platform for young people to receive help now.
Why are we featuring this tour on TwilightMOMS? There is no connection to Twilight or Stephenie Meyer but we as the TwilightMOMS administration felt that this cause is so important that it needed a spot on our blog. How many of us can say that we haven’t been touched by mental illness or suicide through a family member, a friend or even ourselves? This is a way to shine a light on a neglected issue. If you’ve ever thought about going to a Blue October concert we would encourage you to make this tour be the one that you buy a ticket for.
