The Host Movie
Posted on 22. Sep, 2009 by AmyO in News
Variety is reporting that the rights to the film version of The Host have been acquired by Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz.
Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have used their own money to acquire screen rights to “The Host,” the first adult novel written by Stephenie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” series.
Andrew Niccol will write the script and direct.
Apparently the rights were aggressively pursued by these three:
In addition to writing four volumes of the “Twilight” series, Meyer has been heavily involved in the screen transfers, and she spurned several overtures for “The Host.” The producers continued lobbying the author and her UTA reps with a significant offer, a strong vision for the project and a collaborative spirit. Meyer eventually said yes.
“We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions,” Wechsler said. “Twilight” has “proven she knows more about what works than most.”
Read the rest of the article, which includes the professional background of all three producers, here.
This has not been confirmed by Stephenie’s management but Variety is usually pretty reliable and accurate with their news so I felt comfortable posting this.
Now that I’ve reported the facts I just have to add a Squeeeeeeeeee! and a Laaaaaaaaaaaaa! to this story! I love, love, love The Host and can’t wait to see a film adaptation!
UPDATE:
Stephenie has just updated her site with this message-
I’m so excited to be working with Nick Weschler, and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz to bring The Host to a visual format. They’ve all been a dream to work with, so lovely and collaborative, and I feel like we’re in a really good place to make a great movie together. And then to have Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly awesome. If you’ve never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I’m having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn’t take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I’m looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.
So, very exciting. Yay Host!
XO

The Host proved onces and for all that Stephenie Meyer is a heck of a storyteller, not just a one hit wonder, according to Stephenie, she would love for Ben and Casey Affleck to be cast as the brothers.

Oh, and I have to tell my mother in law. She’ll be exstatic! She liked the Twilight series, but she LOVED The Host! I can imagine that there is a whole other world of Host fans out there, outside of the Twilight fans. That is really cool!

Ecstatic!!! Sarahpat I totally agree. This is one of those wishes that I had but never thought would come true. I’m so happy for Stephenie and us lucky admirers. I’m going out to get Gattaca (I feel so ashamed I haven’t seen it). I just heard the song “You take away my oxygen” that’s me! Now for actors…..Oh I can’t think I’m too excited!!!

Oooo, the guy from Gattaca is in on this? That is a VERY VERY good thing. Gattaca is an amazing movie and the subject matter fits perfectly with The Host. Awesome news!

So, so, so very exciting!!!! What an amazing book. Because so much of it is internal, it will be quite interesting to see a film adaptation. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Gattaca just happens to be one of my favorite movies. Looks like The Host is in good hands!

OMG! This is amazing, I really liked this books, and right after I finished it, i told myself “yep, this is going to be a movie at some point,” and looky here, we got a movie in the works. Just amazing, you know who should play Melanie? Jessica Beil, she would be amazing! She has that tan, sporty look on her. And Jared? Well, that is kind of hard I’ll go with ian somerhalder, but for Ian? What about Jensen Ackles, he looks so sweet!

It’s about time. The Host was written for film making. I think the chick in doomsday would make a great melanie stryder…as for the guy..hmmm Russell Crowe or Gerard Butler would make great picks! I prefer Gerard Butler! He has that rugged handsomeness that women love! At least I do.
