20 Differences between New Moon the book and the movie

Posted on 22. Nov, 2009 by AmyO in News

FEARnet takes a look at some of the major differences between New Moon the book and the film.

If you’re a diehard Twilighter, you might wonder just how different New Moon the film is from the book. Below, we name 20 ways the movie deviates from Meyer’s tome – and works all the better for it.

Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg faced an enormous challenge adapting Stephenie Meyer’s 500+ page novel for the screen, but it’s clear that the filmmakers chose to remain steadfastly faithful to Meyer’s book. (Perhaps to a fault, considering the reviews.) Still, for fans, New Moon should feel just authentic enough to drive it toward an enormous opening weekend. So how do Rosenberg’s additions, changes, and omissions from the text affect New Moon on film, and which ones work the best?

Check out their list here.

What did you all think of the differences between the book and the movie?

First- too many trailers and sneak peaks. Not much unseen just missing pieces.
Followed the highlights of the book. Cinematography was beautiful! Especially of Italy. Too little of the Volturi. Cgi- excellent of the wolves. Special effects and camera work epic quality. Sam’s dive off cliff amazing work.
Story moved along yet something was off with after dialogue there seemed to be a pause before actors began next sentence. Like stiff. Very disappointed
in Alice’s wardrobe. Totally not the fashionista like in the books. Would see it again.

Nice analysis! Some discrepancies I noticed that I missed or didn’t work well in the movie:

-Jasper should not have been in the school, he had graduated the year prior…but I love his line in the high school!
-Edward DID give Bella a gift, a CD of the music he had composed. But for the sake of showing how distraught he was, I guess walking away was okay.
-Edward protected Bella when she was attacked at the party.
-Edward had spent months tracking Victoria and just hanging out in a hole in Brazil. He had not been eating so his eyes SHOULD have been black. But he did look extreamly horrid in Italy, so I can forgive (a little!)
-Charlie seemed a little to wishy washy (?). I thought that he would have been more desperate and angry with Bella.
-Jacob didn’t tattle on Bella. In the book he brings back her motorcycles, which naturally ticks of Charlie. That should have been in the ending.

All that being said, this one was about 100 times better than the original. The acting was MUCH better (granted, it should be since this is the 2nd movie.) especailly Taylor Lautner. Some of the best things he does is just with his eyes (Sam looking at him when he brings Bella out of the woods, the sly look he gives Bella when he pulls the bikes down and when he is instructing her on how to ride the bike). And thank god Edward lightened up some! He was fun, lovable and even more hot than he was in the first movie. He was more like the Edward Stephanie wrote. Good job Rob! Kristen as well…not so much lip bitting. The scene in the woods was GREAT with her just walking and saying – not yelling or screaming – “Edward. Edward. Edward.” I really got a lump in my throat during that scene. I also LOVED Nikki Reed at the end, her line was a great set up for the next movie. Can’t wait to see the heart to heart between her and Bella.

Chris Weitz did a GREAT job! I can’t wait to see what David Slade does with Eclipse. About 200 days away!!!

    Wow where to begin?
As far as descrepancies, there were some but always remind myself that Mrs. Meyer gave her approval on everything. They were much more minor.
#1 Alice giving her the dress (and Jasper being at school). Bella wasn’t wearing that outfit but had on a blue shirt that had to be replaced with one of Esme’s after it was soaked in blood.
#2 Jasper and Emmett gave her the radio for her truck.
#3 Rose didn’t give her anything.
#4 We didn’t know they were plane tickets until Edward was in Bella’s room that night. In fact, that tidbit was never made clear in the movie due to the papercut.
#5 Bella didn’t get the motorcycles in a junkyard.
#6 After Jacob and Paul fight (which wasn’t at his house) they did go to Emily’s. That made sense since they were in the woods. In the movie, they were at the Black residence.
#7 I miss the breafkast conversation between Alice and Charlie when she came back.
#8 When Alice and Bella leave, Jacob forgoes the treaty and promises to watch out for Charlie.
#9 In the movie, Alice sees the vision of the Volturi saying no but that was actually while in flight not minutes before 12:00.
#10 Didn’t like to see the Cullens so vulnerable
#11 Miss the whole “I’m dreaming I must be dead” and then reminding Edward he must’ve thought he had a soul because they were both in Heaven.
#12 Wanted to see them run through the woods on their way to the vote which was actually in the middle of the night but by the time they got back from the Cullens it was daylight.
#13 Wish the scene between JEB was at her house. I wanted to hear Charlie bellow for her.

This is minor stuff. It was a great movie (already seen it twice) and will see it at least two more times.

I liked the write-up here. Sure there were differences from the book, but what book-to-film doesn’t have them? I thought Weitz did an amazing job of keeping faithful to the text, and was fine with the minor changes. I loved the opening shot of the new moon. I loved the breakup of Bella and Edward (yeah, I got teary-eyed even). I loved Michael Sheen, whenever he was on screen. I was so moved when she told Jacob she would always choose Edward. (I think they should have added the sound of a wolf howling in the background right after he ran into the woods…I’m so melodramatic!) I loved the ending. It was perfect.

My big beef was with Alice’s costumes. She would have been arrested by the fashion police! Yuk!!

I agree withthe notes above….those things were missing, but I still ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!! I noticed that they also took out the whole flight home from Italy and the whole “You will never do that to me again/Don’t ever to that to me again” was Charlie o Bella in the movie, whereas it was Esme to Edward in the book. I think Chris Weitz and Melissa Rosenberg did an amazing job! Kudos to them both!

I like the movie a lot much better than the first one the only thing it bothers me was how they let Demitri grab Alice by the neck nobody can touch Alice nobody and Felix don’t have any powers in the movie looks like he petrifies his enemies didn’t like that all the rest great.

I loved it! Yes there were a few things that were missed from the book, it was so much more like the book than i had wished for. I would like to thank Chris Weitz for listening to the fans and staying with the book i have already seen it once and plan to go back and see it again and i can’t wait for the DVD and i do hope they get Chris Weitz to direct Breaking Dawn i think he would do a great job.

I missed Edward defending Bella to the Volturi. After all, she is not the only human among the vampires. His depth and seething anger make him much more sexy in print than the screenplay allows on film.

I also preferred the angry voice of Edward admonishing Bella for her recklessness to the ‘parental’ style of the visions in the movie. If he was angrier and more desperate the visions would have been more on target.

And I very much missed Alice’s conversation with Charlie. The Cullens all have so much more dimension in the books. No one even knows about Alice’s background and her connection to James in Twilight. May not be important to the story line, but makes her much more real.

Loved Edward much more this time. Lost my composure at the Abercrombie-ad styling of his slacks when he steps out from under the clock tower.

Bella is still too flat and one dimensional. But at least the sweetness and romance came through in New Moon. They really blew that in Twilight.

Loved the CGI and the Quileutes. The rest of the changes were minor and made sense, though Bella never should have actually gotten on that bike in Port Angeles.

Alices’ clothes were horrible! Jacob getting off cycle & running to Bella-terrible scene. Once he gets to Bella LOTS BETTER. I did not like how they made Jasper look.
Great comments above-love the one about his eyes should of been black.
Jacob sounded funny when he confronted Alice and said things are going to “get real ugly in here.”

The scene at the airport of Jasper staring at Alice that would have been intense. It was intense for me in the book. The part where the humans enter the feeding room for the Volturri should have been longer and more intense. I liked the film, but it could have been longer really!!!
