Chris Weitz will not retire from directing

Variety is reporting that Chris Weitz will continue his relationship with Summit “right away” by directing The Gardener. The movie has, “no werewolves or vampires, just a Mexican gardener in Los Angeles,” according to Weitz.
Weitz also addressed rumors that he would stop directing after his next project as was reported on New York Post’s Page Six late last week. The report intimated that Weitz would quit directing due to the treatment he received during production on The Golden Compass, but according to Weitz, working on New Moon “invigorated” him:
Weitz said Summit and author Stephenie Meyer trusted him to honor the books while adding his own stylistic imprint, something that didn’t happen on “The Golden Compass.”
“This was a wonderful experience by comparison. I got to work with terrific young actors at the top of their game, and see Taylor Lautner perform so well.”

Ditto AmyO! I’ve been sweating it ever since reading that article in People. And after seeing NM I left the theater going, “Missing HIM as a contender for BD is just heartwrenching!” The balance of the emotions in NM shows he truly understands the female psyche and how to bring it to the big screen in a manner that contends with the big “guy” flicks. Hence it’s sitting up there with Spider Man 3 and Dark Knight.
