New Moon’s Opening Weekend – By the Numbers

Posted on 22. Nov, 2009 by JulieAndJasper in News

New Moon’s opening weekend has earned it a place in entertainment history. EW’s Box Office Report is reporting that New Moon grossed an estimated $140.7 million at the box office this weekend and is now “the biggest autumn opening weekend in history and the third biggest three-day debut ever.” And New Moon is ranked third in overall opening weekend rankings, just behind The Dark Knight and Spider Man 3.

And just for fun, and because it sorta blew my mind once I started looking at it, here is a comparison of Twilight and New Moon opening weekends by the numbers:

Midnight Showings
Twilight – $7 million
New Moon – $26.2 million

Opening Day
Twilight – $35.7 million
New Moon – $72.7 million

Opening Weekend
Twilight (US & Canada) – $69.7 million (3,419 theaters)
New Moon (US & Canada) – $140.7 million (4,024 theaters)

Worldwide estimates are that New Moon’s opening weekend box office totals are around $258.8 million. Twilight’s total worldwide gross was $383.5 million. In one weekend, New Moon has brought in over 67% of Twilight’s total box office sales.

And keep in mind, Twilight’s opening weekend accounted for 36% of it’s total sales, if that trend continues New Moon could be on it’s way to grossing over $300 million domestically (Twilight’s domestic total was $192.7), not to mention the worldwide totals added in there.

Where the heck is the bug eyed smilie when I need it??

What I think is the most interesting is the midnight showings figures. Because none of those #s are people seeing it again.

They were all die hard fans, out at midnight, seeing it for the first time….over TRIPLE the number that ventured out to the theaters at midnight last year. :)

Those numbers are amazing. I just saw it Sunday morning and I thought it was a great movie! Some parts I felt went a little fast, but you can only do so much with a movie. I am definitely going to go see it a few more times. I am so very excited for eclipse and breaking dawn now!!!

I think that’s fabulous. Gotta remember that it’s playing in about 20% more theaters. So the numbers should be a bit higher. Still, this is awesome for the franchise and I hope that means a green light for Breaking Dawn.

Awesomeness! Thanks again Chris for the film and I’m so glad everyone has been turning out to see it. Friends in England are saying they were in sold out theatres too so those numbers should help.

I have to agree, I feel kind of cool thinking that I was one of those Midnight viewers! AND I even went to work the next day!!! It was a blast and I have never been to a movie that the audience was so quite! I felt like part of a community. That was neat. How many more days til Eclipse? 219?

I was able to get the last seat on Friday for a 10:10pm showing. It was awesome! The crowd had more of a reaction to Taylor L that Rpatz. They even laughed at Alice’s vision of Bella/Edward running in those flowy clothes. And of course the young ones went crazy over Edward proposing at the end. There were a few “odd” moments like Jacob at the end of the theater scene. The pack never breaks a sweat even though they run hot or even when they get angry, etc. But overall awesome! Soundtrack is cool too. I got the bonus disk with the music interview from Target – cool I just wished they would have shown the music video after the interviews that was the only letdown.

I saw it twice on Friday. Every show was sold out here. At least two of the shows were sold out online. I feel bad for the people who didn’t think to purchase their tickets ahead of time online. :(

I am so glad that I was able to see it last night. A lot of the theaters were sold out where I live. The movie was awesome and I can’t wait for Eclipse to come out.

I was in line at 10:30 on Thursday night for my 12:01 showing and I have to say, I WAS NOT DISSAPOINTED!!! The whole thing, if I was going to do a movie based on a book as wonderful as New Moon, I would have chosen exactly the scenes, of course, I would have liked some of it to be longer but, WOW, it was beyond awesome and I am going to go see it again, all the tickets are sold out pretty much the first week.
