New Moon’s success = Girl power!

NPR has an article this morning discussing New Moon‘s weekend blockbuster sales and columnist Linda Holmes has an interesting point:

It may seem at times like the only people who can drive blockbusters anymore are teenage boys playing video games, but don’t you believe it. You give them the right story, and teenage girls will fork over just as much money.

When looking at the 90 most successful opening weekends of all time, it appears she has a point. New Moon is the only movie listed in the top 37 that is specifically targeted at a female audience. And that’s because Twilight was ranked #38. The only other female-audience-targeted movie listed is Sex and the City at #67. Here’s a look at the top 10:

1 The Dark Knight
2 Spider-Man 3
3 The Twilight Saga: New Moon
4 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
5 Shrek the Third
6 Spider-Man
7 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
8 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
9 Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
10 Shrek 2

37 Twilight
67 Sex in the City

I’d say the placement of New Moon at third on that list illustrates Holmes’ point pretty darn well.

Here’s hoping studios will start to realize that we like to go to the movies with our girlfriends just as much (if not more) as our husbands, boyfriends, etc.

Absolutely. As long as the story is there, I will buy the ticket. Or as the case was this weekend, I will buy multiple tickets.
But far too often, the story is not there (as was the case with Sex in the City). Girls and women are a more difficult movie audience. Lately most of the big movies released from Hollywood were not made with me in mind. What has appealed to me are smaller, indie films. And those do not get a wide release.

Lets hear it for the GIRLS!!

I know what this article is getting at… but, I saw 8 out of ten of these movies. Also, the audience in the theaters I went to was, at least, one third guys.

Maybe I am too easily amused. But, lots of girls like an action flick as much as, or more than, a more sentimental film.
