MTV’s ideas for wider audience appeal for Eclipse
Posted on 02. Dec, 2009 by Amanda31 in News
MTV’s Movies Blog has posted their suggestions on what Eclipse can do to appeal to a wider audience. I love some of these ideas:
Amp up the Bella and Edward romance
“Twilight” established the potent romance between Bella and Edward, but “New Moon” sacrificed much of the chemistry for the sake of Bella’s growing bond with Jacob. Granted, the reason why Edward was mostly absent during “New Moon” was because he broke up with Bella and was moping around in an apartment for months on end, but Chris Weitz forgot to reestablish why exactly Bella and Edward were so in love. With “Eclipse,” we hope David Slade explores their connection, especially with so many fans jumping ship to Team Jacob after seeing Taylor Lautner’s abs.Have fun with it
Some of the best parts of “New Moon” were when screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and director Chris Weitz let loose and had fun with the film. “Face Punch,” anyone? (This I consider a stroke of genius. I expect a “Face Punch” movie poster for Chanukah.) Flying Virgin America to Italy? Jessica’s commentary on zombie films? If “Eclipse” doesn’t take itself too seriously and doesn’t hold itself too close to the book, it could turn out to be not only a great movie for “Twilight” fans, but a great film in general.
Check out their other suggestions here.

I’m in agreement on both comments but especially on the first point. For all of (the movie) Twilight’s faults – it had that spark of blissful love chemistry that had me returning again and again for a taste. I’ve got the prom neck to lip kiss memorized.
New Moon lacked in the sizzle department. I guess that’s why I felt disappointed after the first viewing, through I’ve since seen it and am satisfied. I hope David Slade didn’t have any fears of diving into the lust. I hope that he was aware of its power and how it makes the series and a big portion of the fan base tick.

I agreed with MOST of the article..but not ALL of it. One thing that sticks in my head was the recommendation that they “don’t stick to closely to the book?” Hhhmmm…not a good idea….

I agree with Brittney. They should keep the integrity of the books. The only film that I hope they may take liberties with is Breaking Dawn.

I’m so weird because I thought New Moon was very romantic. I think I liked Edward and Bella’s chemistry more, even though they weren’t together as much. Rob was more confident in NM. I do hope they stick to the book. Did MTV just suggest that they not. Shame on them!

I must be the weirdo here. I really felt Bella and Edward’s love more in New Moon. I could feel her pain at his loss and then you saw his pain when he thought she’d died. When they finally meet again in Italy, you can see/feel how much they love each other. They acted more like boyfriend/girlfriend. I didn’t feel the connection with Bella and Jacob like I did in the book.

I also agree that the advice to stray from the book is absolutely NOT what fans want. The reason many fans were let down with Twilight the movie was because it strayed so far from the book and left crucial moments out. I for one, never felt the intense relationship between Bella and Edward from the movie… not like in the book. I think they have the chance to remedy that in Eclipse. In fact, if they stick to the book, the passion and obsession that these two share for each other will come through with no effort.

Am I the only one confused as to why it needs a wider audience? I mean, come on, New Moon and Twilight have both been ridiculously successful. Just because boys didn’t watch it, doesn’t mean Twilight needs them to watch. Girls and women made Twilight and that is who its for in the end. To MTV and their quest for a wider audience, I say BAH HUMBUG!

1) Isn’t it a bit late to be talking about what they SHOULD do with Eclipse when it’s already in post?
2) There is absolutely no need to attract a wider audience,

I agree with No. 1 of their suggestions but don’t think they need to stray from the books to inject humour. There’s plenty of fun witty dialogue in the books as it is.
I also don’t get why or how they think they can attract a wider audience. The fanbase is wide enough as it is and the boxoffic numbers show it. Why should those who did not see the first two movies and have not read the books, bother to watch the third installment of the saga? Doesn’t make much sense.

Please stick to the book!!!! I also loved the relationship between Bella and Edward in New Moon. They just ARE. It just seemed to be finally right once they were reunited in Italy even in a horrible situation.

I don’t agree with the first point for a variety of reasons. First of all, in “New Moon”, Bella is shown falling apart when Edward leaves, and putting herself in risky situations in order to see him again. When his life is in danger in Italy, she goes to him in a heartbeat. I don’t see how they could have made it more clear that she and Edward are in love.
Of course there are going to be more Team Jacob fans after New Moon, Taylor did a great job, and in order for Eclipse to work Jacob has to be a viable contender for Bella’s heart. A thriving Team Jacob faction is not a sign that New Moon didn’t work.

I have seen New Moon 3 times just to try and scrape together what little intimate scene they gave us in New Moon between Edward and Bella. Catherine Harwicke might not have shot the most beautiful looking movie but she SOOO understood the importance of the love story and showing it on film. I LOVE the Twilight Saga as written by Stephenie Meyers. Twilight is a 21 century Love Story…please respect the character dynamics from the book and reflect it in the screen play and in the movie direction. IT’S BELLA AND EDWARD, NOT Bella and Jacob. You wouldn’t try and change Romeo and Juliet to Paris and Juliet, or Cathy and Heathcliff to Cathy and Edgar (Wuthering Heights), or Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy to Elizabeth and Mr. Fitzwilliam (Pride and Prejudice) great love stories. GIVE US THE EMOTIONAL connection between Bella and Edward again.
We were cheated in New Moon. It was beautifully shot and grand but Bella and Edward’s reconciliation story was almost an after thought at the end of the movie; and in the book it was clearly one third of the story. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY. You gave us the BREAK-UP scene but you DIDN’T GIVE US THE MAKE-UP scene, (with all the beautiful dialogue between Bella and Edward 3 chapters), and you know what they say about MAKING UP AFTER BREAKING UP THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT. SUMMIT please pay attention.
