Stephenie Meyer update on Breaking Dawn
Posted on 12. Jan, 2010 by Amanda31 in News
Stephenie just posted this update on her web site in regards to (false) rumors that surfaced yesterday that she’s fighting with Summit to have Breaking Dawn made into one movie versus two:
Just a quick note on the subject of the Breaking Dawn film: there is no drama over whether the book should be one movie or two. My personal feeling is that it would be very difficult to cram the whole story into one movie (as I’ve said in many interviews previous to this), but if a great way of doing that surfaces, I’m all for it. Two or one, whichever way fits the story best is fine by me, and everyone I’ve spoken with at Summit seems to feel the same way. We’re all excited to move forward on this, and we are slowly and surely getting there. I know people are anxious for news, and so sometimes gossip get fabricated to stir things up, but there’s no basis to this particular story.

Thank goodness. A website for adults who love Twilight. I have been scouring the web for news of Breaking Dawn and am very happy to read this. I was worried after New Moon that they were pushing Jacob so strongly that we would never get to see the Edward/Bella conclusion to the saga. I’m thrilled that they are going to bring Breaking Dawn to film whether one or two.

I am happy that Meyer spoke up for herself. Way to go. Ted did update on the matter today, however, I think he’s still confused by the fact that SM has always wanted the movies to be made into two movies.
That being said, as Ted said today, I wonder if there is a screenwriting issue that was confused. Not a fight, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think is any Meyer vs Summit issue going on. But, as ShariG pointed out, the Jacob/Bella relationship was being pushed pretty strongly in NM and you most blogs and Twilight Sites/news articles have people SCREAMING for a new screenwriter b/c of the obvious weak scripts in Twilight and NM. And, it’s not just a few people here or there.
I, for one, would like to see more than a 10-second conversation b/w Edward and Bella and much much more depth into their relationship. I don’t want to see BD become all about a gory birth and a big bad fight. It’s always been about the love story. Always. In fact, I would have to say that a very high % of fans of the books, at first, skimmed over all fight scenes in the book to get back to Edward and Bella’s love story. I know I did (but, I’ve read each book a few times now and while I did, eventually, stop skimming over the fights – but, the love story is what it’s all about for me). We need more than a good director who can lead the cast and provide good CGI. At the very least, Melissa needs a co-writer and/or needs to work DIRECTLY with Meyer on writing the BD script.

And she did it in a mature, polite way…unlike Mr. Casablanca and some of the other people she was responding to.

Would love to see Steph work closly on the BD movie. And the best outcome would be for her to have her hand in the scrpit. As was said, the sage is about the love story for me. There needs to be more dialog between Edward and Bella, BD is full of great dialog. I think New Moon was focused on the teen audience and that’s why they have been pushing Jacob. It is no secret that, we, the Twilight Moms, are into Edward and the love story. And we do make up a big part of the viewing public.
Steph responded in a very tactful way and hpefully her voice will be heard. even though I would sit for a 4 hour movie, spliting BD into two would probly facilitate a better product. Along with staying true to the core story and dialog of the book.

As far as I’m concerned, sites like this one and the other very popular ones, should use their voice. It’s very obvious that Melissa needs help with the BD script so that the love story isn’t brushed aside for a focus on a gory birth and fight scenes. It’s a love story first and foremost. I will feel betrayed as a fan if the script isn’t much better. In fact, I will even feel betrayed as a fan if Eclipse turns out that way too. I don’t know how Melissa could miss the boat on the love story. It’s what, I believe, 90% of fans loved the most. When I hit forums, I don’t see much discussion on fights at all. I see everyone, young and older, discussing the LOVE story. How Summit and Co. have missed this and turned the onscreen Saga into a movie gushing with fight scenes and over-playing the Bella/Jacob relationship, is beyond me.
I think sites like this need to speak up and post a request to get Melissa help with the screenplay for BD and list what we want to see and why this would benefit all. We have a voice and we need to use it! We’re smart, passionate fans who know these books inside and out. We’ve spent countless hours on the internet and in our book clubs discussing these books. We know, best of all, what true fans want!
