Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga sweeps USA Today’s Bestseller List again

USA Today has posted the best seller list for 2009 and for the second year in a row the Twilight Saga swept the top four spots.
Led by Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, vampires devoured USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list in 2009.For the second year in a row, Meyer swept the top four spots. No other author — not even J. K. Rowling— has done that in the list’s 16-year history.
Meyer’s coattails pulled 16 other vampire titles onto the list of the year’s 100 most popular books.
“Meyer had an unbelievable impact,” says Michael Norris, books analyst for Simba Information, a market-research firm. He wonders what publishers will do when what he calls ” ‘the vampire industrial average’ falls. Every cycle has an end.”
But for now, Meyer — who has also benefited from Twilight movie adaptations, with more to come — has turned “the YA (young adult) category into the PG-13 of books,” he says. “She’s not just read by tweens and teens, but by a lot of 30-year-old women.”

Not just women in their thirties… I’m 35 but there are many women older than me reading that stuff too! I’ve been reading the books 4 times in the last 6 months!

It always amazes me how incredulous people seem to be that anyone over 15 would enjoy Stephanie’s books..I’m 51 and I LOVE everything she’s ever written. Personally, I think that being older means you can relate more to the things she writes about. Not of course being in love with a vampire….but just being in love for the first time, as well as the 4th or 5th.
I’m rereading them now!

And The Host is #19. It amazes me that people are still wondering why, attributing it to the “teens and tweens.” Maybe they are just good books!!!

I’m 56 and have read (and reread and reread, etc.) Stephanie’s books. The article made it sound like 30-somethings were hiding away, reading forbidden material!! Guess at my age, there is no more forbidden material! I love her books, I love her writing style. I don’t care anymore what other people think about my book selections. I certainly don’t care what reviewers think!!!!!

I’m so glad to hear this. I’m 50+ also and after not finding anyone to see the New Moon movie again (I had seen it twice with friends), I went to see it myself. I also bought my own Christmas presents – the audio cd’s of the Twilight Series and a Twilight mom t -shirt. It’s nice to know there are others out there who are women of a certain age and Twilight fanatics.
