Xavier Samuel on Eclipse and David Slade
Posted on 17. Jan, 2010 by Amanda31 in News
Xavier talked to 9 News about Eclipse and working with David Slade:
“It’s a really action-packed film and I had a really great time running around on wires and learning how to fight like a vampire – however that is,” he laughed.
“Whenever we weren’t shooting we were in stunt training or in the gym running around. It was pretty intensive actually.”
Samuel said the third film would have a darker look, thanks to new director David Slade.
“It seems like David has approached it very differently to the previous directors – I think he’s really embracing the darker side of it, which is really cool,” he said.
“He’s uber intelligent, very technically astute director.”

Aaaahh… why do all the guys in the film keep saying it’s a dark film which is “really cool”… it’s supposed to be a ROMANCE. I sure hope David Slade found a good way to incorporate both…

I am all for a kick butt vampire fight sequence…but if D. Slade messes up the romance, and I don’t see a leg hitch, he is going to have one VERY angry, almost middle age, mom of 2 chasing him to the ends of the earth….Eclipse is my favorite book , and if the movie version turns out to be part 2 of that vamp movie he made with Josh Hartnett I am going to be livid!

Again, another actor explaining that EC is dark and action packed. EC was my favorite book, too and I never saw it as dark. I doubt true fans of the book do. And, I’ve asked this again and again: Did Melissa even take two seconds to look on a few different forums to see what parts of EC fans are discussing so she could see what parts absolutely need to be in the movies? B/c it’s NOT the fights!!! 97% (IMO) of fans want ROMANCE. Heck, if they summed up the fights in five minutes, I’d be happy as a lark!
I’m with Sgryder1973, I’m going to be so angry if the romance is, once again, put on the back burner. Not only do I want a leg hitch, I want Edward and Bella to have more than a 10-second conversation!! It’s pretty obvious that we’re going to be disappointed. One could hope that the powers that be are reading all these kinds of comments and pull the actors in for a long weekend of filming some extra shots. But, I think we’re all DREAMING if we think that’s going to happen.
This is very frustrating. The film series has become Melissa’s stories. Not Meyer’s and I’m very deeply saddened by this. I think Weitz tried, but, could only do so much with the script he was given.
Bottom line, if Melissa and director’s focused on the romance and the conversations, and less on the action and fights, they’d STILL pull the same amount of people into the theaters.
One would hope that they’ll get it right for BD. But, I’m not holding my breath.
Another frustrating interview!

I think the other thing that really worries me is that after CW was named director of New Moon, SM immediately released a comment in support of the choice. Correct me if I am wrong, TwiMoms, but my usually stellar memory does not recall such a statement after the DS hire. I am just praying they do not ruin it….MR, this is not Dexter !!(which I love, but…..)

CH really GOT IT…she loved the project and championed it she wanted to make the book come alive make it visual on the screen, she got that we wanted to see the HEAT and she did a GREAT job considering she had 5 weeks and 37 million.
CW made a grand and beautiful film but forgot the ending (last 3 chapters flight, truth, vote) 10 minutes at the end of New Moon it was the reconcilation and why he left. It’s when they hug and kiss and Bella has her epiphany. The second arc in the book and movie for these two characters.
I could have used less in the garage and wolves running in the woods. If you want to save time cut those scenes, OR just extend the movie, they are doing it with other films now.
MR the screen writer needs to be replaced or have Stephenie do a major assist.
Now DS (Eclipse) is (and I hope I am wrong) giving us more action and back story added and is leaving out B/E scenes. Again I hope I am wrong, about Eclipse.

I agree, Debra!! Why do I feel that the books are about Bella and Edward (and Jacob, to a smaller extent), but the movies are all about showing things that SM did not write about? And adding Jake ( LOVE TL, but geez) and action scenes as much as possible? What is that? UGH

Thanks for your response sgryder1973…
Through out Eclipse Edward and Bella are very affectionate embracing and kissing each other a lot.
In Chapter 8 Temper, it was so hot especially when he comes back from hunting and she finds herself in the bed with Edward and she was suppose to be angry with him and they are kissing and he is hitching her leg around him, whew…
The WHOLE chapter 20, COMPROMISE with the proposal OMG, very very hot and sensual.
Chapter 22 Fire and Ice, when Edward “yes I would let her go. But I would keep watch. You see, Jacob, you might leave her someday. Like Sam and Emily, you wouldn’t have a choice. I would always be waiting in the wings, hoping for that to happen.”
Then Chapter 27 Needs, and she knows who she can not live with out and she quotes “IF ALL ELSE PERISHED, AND HE REMAINED, I SHOULD STILL CONTINUE TO BE; AND IF ALL ELSE REMAINED, AND HE WERE ANNIHILATED, THE UNIVERSE WOULD TURN TO A MIGHT STRANGER.” and Edward says “I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT MY LIFE! I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT MY SOUL!” “Yes,” that’s my point” and they are in their meadow and he want’s her now!!! HOT, HOT, HOT.
They need to show more of Bella and Edward in the next movie Eclipse, but I am afraid that David Slade will be giving us more of the fight/action scenes and back stories that were only briefly featured in Eclipse the book, except for the fight scene between Edward, Seth, Bella, Riley and Victoria at the end of Eclipse.
Twilight Saga is a romance not an action movie and that is why the readership and fans made the books and the first movie such a success. We watch and re-watch the movies because of the emotional connection between Edward and Bella.
Let’s face it Robert and Kristin have GREAT chemistry and it comes across on the screen. When they are not on the screen we fast forward to those scenes and play them over and over again. Summit needs to remember that before they ruin the franchise. This is my opinion but I know a lot of fans who do feel the same way.
