MTV suggests M. Night Shyamalan to direct Breaking Dawn

Posted on 29. Mar, 2010 by in News

MTV has thrown M. Night Shyamalan’s hat in the ring as a potential director for Breaking Dawn. This suggestion isn’t based on any info from Summit, but instead on Shyamalan’s recent comments about Twilight at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards (and his current project The Last Airbender with Jackson Rathbone).

“I would’ve loved to be– I love the series, and Catherine [Hardwicke's] movie, it was one of my favorite movies of that year,” he said. “Really, I thought tonally, it was a perfect movie. I called her up after I saw ‘Twilight’ and was like ‘That was amazing.’ So I’m a big fan.”

How would you feel about  M. Night Shyamalan directing Breaking Dawn?

I think M. Night is one of the best! I definately think he could do “Breaking Dawn” justice. Wow, this could be incredible

I will reserve my judgement until after I see The Last Airbender. It looks like he is going more mainstream with that movie. So if he can do a good job with it, then I can possibly see him as the director for Breaking Dawn. As long as he reads the books and sticks to the story.

That’s hard to say. I love his movies, all except The Sixth Sense just because I have a thing about ghosts, but I don’t know if this would be the kind of movie for him to do. I would have to see more movies by him focusing on human emotion, Airbender may be a good telling point since it is also based on someone else’s vision and has a lot of human emotion…both of which I don’t feel we’ve seen from him yet.
Could he do a good job from the movies I’ve already seen? Yes, but would it be the best it could possible be…I’m not sure.

Hmmm…interesting! I do like his movies, especially Sixth Sense and Signs. I am not sure about the other people that have been thrown around because I havn’t seen them. I just hope they get the wedding and honeymoon right.

I don’t think he would do well with BD. I just don’t see him “getting it.” I fear he might not be up to the job of incorporating the necessary humanity, or emotions into the movie characters.

UMMM…NO!!!! The only movie by him that I liked was Sixth Sense, but the other he’s done were terriable…BD is my FAVORITE book in the series and if he messes this up i will be so disappointed.

He would be fantastic! This post really made me excited for the potential if BD. I honestly feel he catches such raw emotions in his movies, which will be perfect for BD. And the fact that he’s a fan to begin with means he’ll be emotionally invested like Chris was. Here’s to hoping he’s “the one”!

Ps.. I have to admit I’m slightly disappointed he was so impressed with Catherine’s version of Twilight. Watching it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Sorry!

I agree with everything you said, especially about Twilight! I have seen everything Shyamalan has done (with the exception of the Last Airbender), and I think he is amazing.

I think that he would do a good job. To be honest, I just want them to pick someone and get started so I would probably be okay with just about any big director at this point.

It would be really cool, because he usually films in the Philadelphia area, which is where I live.

I’m not sure … there’s such a diverse blend of love story plus all the Volturi issues …

As much as he loved Catherine’s Twilight, then I’m saying no way.

I love his work, but I do not think he would make a good Breaking Dawn.

I do not care WHO they get as long as he/she is the “RIGHT” one to do this most important movie! It simply must be someone who has the raw talent, but is also versatile and clever enough to nurture the depth of Edward and Bella’s relationship, to include all key scenes and to reveal the degree of intensity and action that the story demands in movie form – to make you almost re-live the book and to feel as if you are right there with the characters. (Someone who cannot pull off this tall order should never be considered.) The budget for such should exist by now. I’m trusting Stephenie – this is still her baby!

He does bring an element of creepiness that could play well. But, does he know how to share joy? There’s great joy in parts of Breaking Dawn.

A director who loves the story prior to even getting involved would bring in a personal desire to do well with the storyline. Breaking Dawn’s director has to be well rounded. The story has so many different elements to work with. I think he would be a good choice.

I love all of his movies. I think he would do a wonderful job. His movies are all about regular people encountering the paranormal. I can see why he would be interested.

It would be interesting to see his take on Breaking Dawn. I think that he could possibly be a good choice.

Besides since he only films in the Philadelphia and surrounding suburban areas of Philly it would mean that we would have the opportunity of watching the film being made. It would give the East Coast fans a chance to experience the filming for a change.

Better him than Sophia Coppola. Good grief, what was that mess called Marie Antoinette? The Revolution’s Queen of France eating Bon Bons and trying on shoes to “I want Candy” by Bow Wow Wow? And no scene of the people of Paris marching on Versailles? ugh
Still hoping Weitz changes his mind and comes back :)

I’m not sure about this…. I like some of his movies, not many are just odd. I don’t *love* anything he’s done, though I also am interested in see TLA. The trailer looks good.

And nobody else mentioned the fact that he usually pops himself in there somewhere…. We definitely have to see the JOY as well as the suspense (as many have said).

Trust Stephenie, that’s our best bet!!

One thing I would say about M. Night is this… several of his movies really do an excellent job of playing out in such a way that you leave the theatre convinced everything happens for a reason and that things usually work out like they are supposed to. I think that he could do an exceptional job specifically with the Bella/Edward/Jacob/Nessie relationships…

I think that even today I have adult female friends who wished that Bella and Jacob ended up together when the imprinting of Jacob and Nessie was so clearly destined. If they didn’t really “get” that reading a book — there will be millions who will miss it when it’s translated to film. It will take a very special director to get that across without spelling it out so we all feel like children.

I do agree with Mel and Ali though — if he was amazed with Catherine’s Twilight – I’d be a little worried if he gets it. Although it’s possible he was just being respectful in case he’s offered the opportunity, instead of sticking his foot in his mouth like David Spade did before being offered Eclipse.

No,NO,Noooooo and No! Sorry, but BD is my favorite book in the saga, and it is going to take a talented director to pull it off. But I do not think that he is the way to go. I like his work, but for a Twilight movie, No. Michelle is so right about getting the whole Jaob/Nessie imprinting across. Escpecially for those who are not familar with the books. A delicate mix of emotions and action, makes for a special director. It going ot be a tough call.

He has my vote! There isn’t a movie that he has made that I have not liked.
