Justin Furstenfeld talks Twilight Soundtracks
Posted on 14. Apr, 2010 by AmyO in News

Those of you that have been reading our blog for a while are very aware of the fact that I’m a HUGE Blue October fan. Stephenie introduced me to their music through her playlists and the rest, as they say, is history. I’ve been very disappointed with the fact that they have not been any of the movie soundtracks. I’ve always wondered if that was because they weren’t interested or if there were other reasons. In this interview with Blast, Justin Furstenfeld, reveals that it isn’t a lack of interest (big sigh of relief!)
“Me and Stephenie Meyer are great friends,” Furstenfeld said. “I hate her camp, but I love her. Stephenie Meyer had the balls to take me to dinner…she said, ‘I wanna put your songs in my movies…’ and I was like, ‘Wow. That’s my dream — let’s do it.’ First movie comes out, no song. Second movie comes out, no song. Her management was like, ‘Everything we told you was a lie.’”
The interview isn’t clear who Stephenie’s “camp” is so please don’t start sending angry letters to anyone. My question to you all is- would you like to see Blue October on the soundtracks? Do you feel that the artists on Stephenie’s playlists should be given preferential treatment because of their influence on the books?

I totally think that BLUE OCTOBER should be on the soundtracks!! Very disappointed that they weren’t ;0( I fell in love with Blue October because of Stephenie’s play lists.

I was a Blue October fan before I was a Twilight fan – I would love to see them on the next two soundtracks. Preferably Congratulations playing when Jacob dances with Bella.

I too was a blue fan prior to twilight, but my love for the group has grown as I have and like many others, I’d LOVE to see ‘balance beam’ or ‘my never’ make an appearance in Eclipse. I feel the folks at summit are missing a big piece of what is quantifiable in the saga by passing up this group!

Stephenie’s favorite bands–the ones that inspired her and reminded her of scenes in the books–should absolutely be given preferential treatment/placement in the movies. Her playlists should be the first source for the movie soundtrack folks. The Twilight movie soundtrack was pretty wonderful, with rises and falls and fast and slow and manic and moving songs, but New Moon fell way short–the soundtrack was there, but did not add an extra dimension to the movie as it did in Twilight. Give Stef her choices. And for goodness’ sake, include Blue October!

Absolutely they should be on some soundtracks!
Love Blue October…there is “something” about Justin’s voice that just MAKES you listen, and of course the lyrics….I think that their mood….a lot of their music fits PERFECTLY with (any) of the movies!

Blu October, can not say enough about them! Was introduced to them through the Breaking Dawn concert series and was in love, No secret the “My Never” was written with Jacob and Bella in mind and would be a perfect choice for the “tent scene” especially when he is evesdropping on Bella and Edwards conversation. Glad to see Justin doing interviews and we all knew he would love to be on the soundtrack

I love Stephenie’s playlist and I think they should have a greater presence in the film soundtracks.

I totally agree with you all. There were at least two songs by Blue October that would have been perfect for new moon such as My Never (sounds just like jacob) and Hate Me (Edward) I was disappointed too. Other songs I thought would be great were Ashes and Wine by Evervansce (Bella when Edward left. Give it a listen.

YES! Blue October should be on the soundtracks- whether it’s a new song specifically for the movies, or a song that already fits from the playlists- does not matter. Their music is so wrapped up in the whole saga for me… it’s just a natural.

Of course Blue October should be on the soundtracks. I was very disappointed that they weren’t on the last two. They were such a major part of SM’s playlist, (the biggest, besides MUSE), that it would be a travesty if they didn’t make it into at least one of the movies. I remember reading a blurb from Stephenie about her wishlist for the New Moon movie soundtrack and Blue October was definitely on that list. From what I remember, her only choice that did make it into the movie was MUSE. I’m crossing my fingers that Blue October will be in Eclipse. Please, please, please Summit and David Slade, Blue October deserves to be on the soundtrack!

I was so disappointed “Hate Me” wasn’t in New Moon, it was perfect for Edward as he leaves. It will be a travesty if “My Never” doesn’t make it into one of the next movies. Summit is missing a great opportunity here if they continue to leave Blue October out.

I’ve been a huge Blue October fan even before they appeared on Stephenie’s playlist. I would love to see “My Never” included on the Eclipse Soundtrack, and “Sound of Pulling Heaven Down” on the Breaking Dawn Sountrack.

The Twilight soundtrack I listened to endlessly, and many young women I know were the same. BUT the New Moon soundtrack was a huge disappointment. In fact, one girl told me she listened to the first two tracks and gave the cd away.
I do not understand why excellent bands had their absolute worst tracks chosen for the New Moon soundtrack, with the exception of ‘possibility.’ The tracks sounded like they were chosen by a middle aged man without rhythm, or marketing ideas, or consultation, or in a hurry, and showed a complete lack of understanding of what young people and older people who love music, like.
The New Moon soundtrack did not reflect an energy that young people love – yes, the movie was sad, but how about Linkin Park, or the current Muse smash hit track, or what about Black Rebel Motorcycle Club doing ‘love burns’ or ‘red eyes and tears’ . Plus the biggest biggest disappointment was a lack of Robert Pattinson’s heartbreaking voice, I didn’t seem to notice Bella’s Lullaby theme either…but it must have been in the film! I think the interlocking marketing that occurred with movie and cd did not not occur on New Moon’s soundtrack. You need to follow Steph’s lead, and consult with the young actors who had input into the first Twilight CD. Please do better next time. Apart from Blue October, bring back Blue Foundation, Paramore. Nobody had parties with this release – like the prom night in the first film… because of the lack of rhythm, bass, drums, soundtrack. New Moon music was more suited to a men only fishing or hunting trip, who’ve forgotten the intimacy, belief in passion and yearning of youth.

When I first read Eclipse, after the fight when Bella goes to tell Jacob who she has chosen , “Congratulations” was playing in the background, which made me cry that much harder! Every time I have read it since, I have heard that song. Please have Blue October on the Eclipse soundtrack!

I bet the Eclipse soundtrack is probably almost wrapped up with their slate of groups since the movie is coming out in 75 days and they’ve got to lay the tracks over the scenes. But with Breaking Dawn probably being two movies, surely there’s a place for Blue October somewhere.

As I’ve said before, the saga was and is Stephenie’s baby and she should have the final say on this decision. B.O. should absolutely be included on the saga soundtrack(s)! There’s simply too much history (from Steph’s usage) and depth in the band’s songs to be ignored.

I am going to go out on a limb here…I don’t know anything about Blue October and I promise I will correct that now after reading this post…
I think part of the dynamic here is that if you want a movie made using the best that Hollywood has to offer you have to let these decisions go and give creative discretion to the director. You won’t get good hollywood talent to sign on unless they feel they are given some freedom to express their own unique creative visions. Yes, Its Stephanie Meyer’s baby, and we all have something we want to see, in this case hear, but in the end I want a well-made movie and am wiling to compromise some of the details if the story is left intact.
Though it does sound like the people involved could be more open to this idea.
OK, dissenting opinion has been offered, please be kind:-)

I agree with Meredith. Stephenie uses the music to help her creative process which is great. But the creative movie people have to go with what works. The music might not fit, but we do have more movies in the future, so it might happen.

Hmmm, I thought the soundtrack to New Moon was excellent. The scene in the forest with Victoria, the Tom Yorke track behind it building the action and emotion? Brilliant editing and synchronization of mood and place. It then transitions to the leap from the cliff and the Grizzly Bear song as Bella sees Edward and nearly drowns. I don’t understand the criticism I’m reading in the comments here when the music was very well matched to those scenes and others. This was a break-up movie, so it seemed to me it was just as Chris Weitz needed to devise–the best break-up “mix tape” ever. Different movie, different aspect of the saga, different energy, different music. IMHO…

I love Blue October! I heard their music before twilight and think that it is awesome. I really hope that in breaking dawn includes some of their songs. I really like never ever and congratulations. They are two perfect songs that I think sum up some of the feelings that Jacob and Bella are dealing with in BD.

I really think Blue October should be in the soundtracks. I was just discussing this myself, about how they haven’t been on the movies yet. I am really dissapointed. And I also was just speaking about the influences he’s had on her during the series.
but, if there ever is a petition stating that we want Blue October in the soundtrack, Sign me up!!!
I would love to have Congratulations on there. Or Sound Of Pulling Heaven Down, preferably when Bella and Edward get married. Ah!
In fact, I’m listening to them right at this moment. I absolutely love them, possibly a bigger fan than Twilight (don’t tell anyone I said that

I’ve been a huge Blue October fan for many years and was thrilled to see that I shared Stephenie Meyer’s love of their music. I have been disappointed that they have yet to make an appearance on a Twilight Saga soundtrack, and really hope that changes. I, too, would be for either an original song created for the sound track or one of Stephanie’s picks (“My Never” or “Sound of Pulling
Heaven Down” or “Congratulations” are my top choices). I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two soundtracks and felt they blended seemlessly and effectively into the movie… Thom Yorke’s “Hearing Damage,” Bon Iver/St. Vincent’s “Roslyn,” and Lykke Li’s “Possibility” gave me chills as I watched New Moon. Rob’s two tracks were unbelieveable in Twilight. So, too, were Mutemath’s and Blue Foundation’s… (as I type this I’m realizing that I really loved 90% of the songs and their placements within the movies, so kudos to the creative heads so far). Blue October is so lyrically wonderful and I’d love to hear them on an upcoming soundtrack. They definitely played in my mind (and on my iPod) as I read the series. Give ‘em a shot!

YES! I agree that Blue October should be on the soundtrack and also the other bands that have inspired
Stephanie while writing these wonderful books. It just makes too much sense! I would love to hear all of them on the soundtracks!
