Stephenie Meyer talks Midnight Sun

Posted on 22. Jun, 2010 by in News

This past week 4 very lucky fan sites got to interview Stephenie Meyer. A large portion of that interview can’t be published until after the Eclipse movie comes out but these sites have posted the conversation they had with Stephenie regarding Midnight Sun.

Stephenie: First question, because we are going to deal with this right now, is Midnight Sun! Right? So we don’t have to…

All: (Lot’s of blabbering…)

Stephenie: I know that’s what everyone cares about.  I also know that the right answer would be for me to say “Oh yah, it’s done! And it’ll be out next month!”  But that’s not true.  It’s also not true that I’ve got a ton of work done on it, and that’s what I’m working on.  What’s true is that I’m really burned out on vampires.  And, I don’t want to write it badly.  So I want to wait until I’m excited about the material again, and I’m excited about Edward, and that it’s something that’s motivating.  You know, when a story is keeping me up at night, and I’m waking up at 4 am in the morning and thinking ‘Yes! That is what is what should happen in this moment!’  Then that is when I can write with happiness! So, right now it feels like homework… it really does.  And when things feel like homework they go very, very slowly for me.  So it’s still not a “It’s not gonna happen!” I want to do it when I can do it right.  You know, I have my share of human stubbornness, and I have to tell you, it’s a little bit hard when people are like “This is the only thing you can do, and it’s the only thing we care about!”  And, you’re kind of like a three year old, you want to be like “I’m gonna do what I wanna do!” Yah.  “You’re not the boss of me!”  So my mom has backed off a little bit.  Actually, I was at The Fray concert, and I was hanging out with the guys backstage.  They’re really cool, and I was talking to Isaac about it.  He was like, “I really want you to do that!”  And I was like “Oh my gosh!  Come on!”  You know I can’t get away from it anywhere.  And, we talked about stubbornness and reverse psychology.  I have this great thing he signed for me, it says “To Stephenie, Don’t work on that stupid book! Nobody wants it anyway!”  I have it by my computer.  That really is the right direction to go with me, because I’m like “Huh!  Maybe I should do it!  I’ll show you!”   Psychology!  Anyway, that’s Midnight Sun!  so, that should disappoint everyone!

Not everyone is disappointed. I want Midnight Sun, I do – but people really need to lay off, She already said when people stop talking about it, then maybe she would write it. Personally, I really want to know about any sequels to The Host. :D

I guess when you have everything you want you stop thinking of others..it just doesn’t seem fair Jacob got to have his story told but not Edwards…we did get a little of it tho …thanks for that…….

I don’t think that’s the issue. If someone stole my work and made it viral I probably wouldn’t feel too passionate about working on it anymore either…

      Wow, seriously?

See, this is why she hasn’t been able to finish it. Her ‘fans’ are pressuring her about her writing and they only see her as an object to get more out of these characters. It’s like they don’t even see her as a human being, just a robot with no feelings.

Jezebelle, it’s her story. Her series isn’t a ‘suggestion box’, so not everyone can get their way in the story. If Stephenie let everyone have their way, the story would make absolutely no sense.

And just like Tatiana said, her story was stolen and leaked in a violation of her privacy. Nobody just gets over that. The Twilight Saga is her baby, and someone close to her betrayed her trust by leaking it. She said in the article, which apparently you didn’t read all the way through, that she wants it to be done well. What would be the point if she just rushed through it all when her heart wasn’t in it all the way? She wants it to be done well, not for just herself, but for us, her fans.

Now tell me, exactly, how she doesn’t think about others?

People need to lay off she’ll get to it when she can and for those who said they won’t read it are lying.
It makes sense she wants it to be good and if it takes years I can wait !

I’m not ready to close the books on the Twilight Saga just yet.

I’d read Midnight Sun, of course, but I am not dying for it. I’d love a continuation of the Twilight world…what happens with Jacob and Renesme? That would be a fun story to read.

I am actually looking forward to something completely brand new from Stephenie! I love Twilight and The Host, and have read them to death. Bring on something new and unexpected!

I want anything by Stephanie, I just love her writting. I think we all need to lay off the “Midnight Sun” topic and let Stephanie have a break. And I agree, a little more Ian would be a good thing!!! :)

At least it’s not a “never gonna happen”. I can wait until she’s ready. I would love a sequel to the Host also.

I loved MS and I find it way more interesting than looking through Bella’s eyes. I’m a big fan of the entire Cullen famiily and you really get a better sense of them when things are in Edwards POV.

It’s just not changing a word here and there to make it Edward’s POV. We get glimpses of it, (his talk with Carlisle about killing himself if they didn’t get to Bella in time with James). I do believe once we got Midnight Sun, we’d want the other three to be done (and interestingly so) from Edward’s POV as well. Oh to be in his mind when he tells Bella goodbye or their honeymoon night.

Well, at least she’s self-aware and realizes that she’s been kinda acting like a 3 year old where Midnight Sun is concerned;-)

I think she needs to write a novel on Fred (Bree Tanner story), and maybe bring The Cullens back into the story from his point of view.

I think any of the characters could be a great story. But reading that little bit of Midnight sun…. made me so thirsty for more. I understand her, but I cant help that craving. I think she will get back to the vampires and I will enjoy midnight sun with my grandchildren.

Funny that she jokes about being the three year old throwing a tantrum, but I’m thinking that’s pretty much everyone else who “cried” (got mad) over her not finishing the manuscript. No wonder she doesn’t want to tell anyone what she’s been working on. Some people seem to think they own her writing her AND her feelings. And last time I checked, half the populous that sue one another in order to make money they didn’t earn are more childish than an author who doesn’t want to write a story. Geez people.

I don’t want Midnight Sun until Stephenie is ready to give it to us, anyway. It won’t be what it should be until she’s excited to write it again.
And I am a forever-and-always fan. It doesn’t matter to me if the next thing she writes is cereal box labels, I would buy every one of them and read them. There is a soulful honesty to her writing that I adore; her characters, every one of them, leap off the page. So, please, Steph, just tell me you’ll keep writing- I don’t care what it is.

I agree with all comments that Meyers has every right to feel any way that she does. And, of course, she can write MS (or not) on whatever timetable she pleases.

What I think is unbecoming is her attitude toward her fans who have made her a bazillionaire overnight. I think everything she has said (concerning MS) could have been communicated in a more gracious way.

I agree as well with the comments that Meyers has said, but I think if that would happen to me, I would bust my butt even harder to get that book out to show whoever did it that they didn’t discourage me at all. it is a shame that they leaked it out and the fans got to read it before it was finished but that just makes us that much more excited for the book. I would really love to hear Edwards side of the story since we have heard Bella’s and Jacob’s. He deserves his spotlight as well.
