Melissa Rosenberg on finding room for characters in Breaking Dawn

Posted on 29. Jul, 2010 by in News

Melissa Rosenberg talked to MTV about fitting in all of the new characters that are introduced in Breaking Dawn.

“It’s extremely challenging to introduce those new characters because you already have quite a slew of characters to service,” Rosenberg admitted of Meyer’s final book. “The Cullen family is large, the wolf family is large, you have three leads … finding room for all of them is a challenge. For me, it is about pulling forward the ones that are essential and really making sure they have a presence.”

Naturally, Rosenberg didn’t say specifically which characters would or would not appear in the films, but simply that she hopes “all of them will be there in one shape or another.”

DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THE VAMPIRE COVENS OUT. THEY CAME TOGETHER IN THE BOOK FOR A REASON. STAY TRUE TO THE BOOK. The books are the reason these movies are such a hit. We as the fans want the book brought to life.

I have very little faith that she can stay true to the book. I really don’t think she even understands the books fully. The way she writes the characters is way off. I am truly scared!

I am probably going to be totally alone on this, but I’d be OK if they cut back time committed to the extra covens that show up in BD. I understand that for the story to work, they needed lots of people on their side to make the Volturi “stop and listen” but honestly, many of them don’t have much impact to the story. They’re background noise – chair fillers who’s names were only given to provide the sheer numbers necessary to stop the Volturi from automatically slaughtering the Cullens. Even in the book, several of the characters in the coven weren’t developed by Stephenie — they were just there. Hanging out.

Personally, I’d rather our time be spent watching the details around Bella, Edward, Jacob, Reneesme and the Cullen/wolfpack unfold than watching them introduce the history of Mary and Randall (“who” you ask? – exactly my point).

I don’t think many people want to waste their time hearing about the backstories of the other covens that join the Cullens in the end. I hope she keeps that info to a minimum. I agree that most people want to know more about Bella, Jacob, Edward, Reneesme and the wolfpack more than anything.

They certainly need the different covens at least mentioned to keep the story true to the book. Back stories need be only Dr. Cullen introducing the covens by name, minimal.Keep this about Bella,Edward,Jacob and Reneesme and of course the wolfpack…also the boy Nahuels story.

i dont think they need a whole back story on all the covens but you cant take them out it is a part of this book and it just wouldnt be breaking dawn if they did remove the covens from the movie they are the witnesses for reneesme, they help bella find her powers STAY AS TRU TO THE BOOK AS POSSIBLE !!!
