Twilight Star Shares Her Struggle With Post-Partum Depression

Posted on 05. Aug, 2010 by in News

We know her as Victoria in Eclipse, among other great roles, but when she’s not on film sets she’s a mom and wife like many of us on TwilightMoms. Recently, Bryce Dallas Howard gave the world a very candid look into her serious struggle with Post-partum Depression when her son (now 3 years old) was born.

Thankfully, many more mom-celebrities are sharing their experiences with PPD, like Brooke Shields and Gweneth Paltrow. As someone who suffered from severe Post-partum Depression after the birth of my first child, I know how incredibly debilitating, dark and lonely an experience it can be. And how hard it can be to reach out for help. So, I’m especially grateful for the amazing courage of these women for speaking publicly about such a difficult and personal period in their lives.

Bryce Dallas Howard shares her experience on Gweneth Paltrow’s website goop.com. Here’s an excerpt:

Post-partum depression is hard to describe—the way the body and mind and spirit fracture and crumble in the wake of what most believe should be a celebratory time. I cringed when I watched my interview on television because of my inability to share authentically what I was going through, what so many women go through. I fear more often than not, for this reason alone, we choose silence. And the danger of being silent means only that others will suffer in silence and may never be able to feel whole because of it.

Thank you, Bryce!

I think it is very brave of Bryce to announce this to everyone. It’s kind of a private thing that women go through, that I am still going through. If people like her can pull through it I know that I can!

I just finished the reading the whole article. I’ve never seen or heard anyone articulate the feeling of PPD so well. She is brave for sharing, and talented for doing it so eloquently.
