Fire at The View Point Inn, Twilight Prom Scene Location

Posted on 11. Jul, 2011 by in News

The View Point Inn in Oregon, where the prom scenes was filmed for Twilight, suffered a fire yesterday. According to local KPTV:

A three-alarm fire that damaged a historic Columbia River Gorge hotel started when sparks from the chimney landed on the cedar roof, according to fire investigators.

The View Point Inn, featured prominently in the movie “Twilight,” caught fire early Sunday afternoon.

Two of the movie’s fans, who came to see the hotel, noticed the fire and alerted staff members, who tried unsuccessfully to put the flames out with a garden hose.

The hotel, built in 1924, was heavily damaged.  Flames burned through the hotel’s roof and gutted the top floor.

The hotel’s owners filed for bankruptcy last month.

Read the rest at KPTV and NWCN. Thanks to Beverly for letting us know about this horrible news.

I feel so bad for all the weddings planned for this summer. It is such a beautiful place. Sadly the current owners are total jerks, never been very kind or considerate with their guests or wedding parties. I will be very interested to see what the cause of the fire was this time. They have had it on the market to sell for years and could never get a buyer.

Look at the chimney, located behind the middle window, on the back side of the roof peak. It’s hard to tell from the angle of this photo, but the chimney height might not be up-to-code. If the chimney is located within 10 feet of the peak, it’s supposed to be 3 ft higher than the peak. I wonder when this chimney was last inspected and cleaned.

I get that this is a historic bldg and all, but cedar shakes make the best kindling– fires right up. That said, I would not want cedar shakes on my roof.

Heard on the news this AM that it was caused by sparks from the chimney which landed on the roof. So, so sad.

I feel so fortunate to have had the chance to visit the Inn last Oct. The owners and staff are gracious and second to none.

As I walked the grounds inside and out and chatted with Staff, I felt moved and compelled at the story of this Historical Landmark. I didn’t want to just take pictures and be on my way to the next site. I wanted to purchase a keepsake, leave a message in their guest book, buy a hot chocolate and leave a donation.

I think we as a Twilight community have the ability to move mountains and I urge and challenge every one of us to spread the word about the Inn needing help. Tell the actors/actresses to help. Make donations at http://www.theviewpointinn.com. Let’s rally Twilght fans!
