Christian Serratos Stands Up Against Dissection in New Peta2 PSA

Christian along with peta2 have released a new PSA for “Cut Out Dissection Month”, encouraging students to refrain from animal dissection in class.
“These animals haven’t donated their bodies to science, and they have the same ability to experience pain and fear as your companion animals at home,” Christian says in the clip.
For those of you who are worried about the consequences of missing out on the assignment, Christian gives an alternative to live animal disection: “Studies have shown that students who use alternatives to dissection perform as well as — if not better than — students who dissect animals. If you’re asked to participate in dissection in your school, ask your teacher for an alternative assignment.”
Does your school offer classes that include animal dissections in the curriculum? Do you mind using a live animal or would you prefer an alternate method? Tell us your thoughts on the alternate method that Christian discusses in the video.

Speaking as someone who teaches bio, including dissection, I feel that if this was going to be an effective video, the alternatives which she mentioned should have been included in the video as web-links at the end.
Just saying its bad and to pass around petitions is not doing enough to promote the alternatives. If the alternatives are going to offer much of a learning experience, then they need to be very realistic. The simulations I have seen have fallen dramatically short. Learning about body function through dissection can be highly informative, but it has to be taken seriously and respectfully.
At my school, we try to ensure that what is dissected comes from animals which have already been slaughtered for meat. (Hearts, lungs, kidneys etc.) No one is ever MADE to dissect something, although the point is made that the more people who learn from the sacrifice of an animal the more worthwhile it is.
