If you’re not yet familiar with the TwilightMOMS Book of the Month (BOTM) from December 2008, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, I’d like to suggest that you fix that. Quickly.

Now, I don’t want to seem pushy, but the reason I’m doing this is because the second book in the series, Catching Fire, will be available September 1st. And that only gives you four days, eleven hours, twenty-nine minutes and thirty-three seconds to read The Hunger Games. (Though I promise it won’t take that long. And I’ll give you fair warning, you won’t be able to put it down once you start. So make sure everyone in your house has been fed and bathed or can fend for themselves for a few hours at the very least. I don’t want to get hate mail from any children or spouses.)

Here’s what Stephenie had to say about Catching Fire:

It not only lived up to my high expectations, it surpassed them. It’s just as exciting as The Hunger Games, but even more gut wrenching, because you already know these characters, you’ve already suffered with them…Stunning. You won’t sleep when you’re reading this one…I suggest beginning in the early morning and clearing your calendar for the day.

And for all of you who just can’t WAIT until Tuesday, I have some news that may just make your day. You can read the first two chapters on-line RIGHT NOW!

Chapter 1 @ Scholastic.com
Chapter 2 @ NPR.org

So to recap, The Hunger Games is amazing, incredible, suspenseful and all kinds of awesome. If you have not read this book, you should. (Once you do, you can check out The Hunger Games BOTM forum to see what other TMs thought about it.)

And with that, I think I’m done bossing everyone around now. (Seriously, go read it!)

I Capture the Castle tells the story of seventeen-year-old Cassandra and her family, who live in not-so-genteel poverty in a ramshackle old English castle. Here she strives, over six turbulent months, to hone her writing skills. She fills three notebooks with sharply funny yet poignant entries. Her journals candidly chronicle the great changes that take place within the castle’s walls, and her own first descent into love. By the time she pens her final entry, she has “captured the castle”–and the heart of the reader–in one of literature’s most enchanting entertainments.

Last April Stephenie chose City of Bones by Cassandra Clare as our Book of the Month. Many of us fell in love with the world of Shadowhunters, Warlocks and Demons and quickly devoured the sequel City of Ashes. Then we started the waiting game for the third and final installment in the Mortal Instruments Trilogy, City of Glass. Well that waiting game has finally been won, our April Book of the Month, City of Glass is available today! Don’t worry- we aren’t going to make you wait until April to discuss the book. Our discussion forums will be open soon (give us a couple of days to get the book read). Cassandra Clare has promised to stop by again to answer questions (YAY!) The forum will be full of spoilers so do not venture in there if you haven’t finished reading.

If you haven’t started this series don’t wait another day!! It is fun, intriguing, and full of mystery and danger! You will love it!!! To quote a certain author we all love- “The Mortal Instruments Series is a story world that I love to live in. Beautiful!” ~Stephenie Meyer

For March Stephenie has selected The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde-

In Jasper Fforde’s Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection. But when someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature and plucks Jane Eyre from the pages of Brontë’s novel, Thursday is faced with the challenge of her career. Fforde’s ingenious fantasy-enhanced by a Web site that re-creates the world of the novel–unites intrigue with English literature in a delightfully witty mix.

I was so obsessed with this book I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn’t have to stop reading. The story kept me up for several nights in a row, because even after I was finished, I just lay in bed wide awake thinking about it. I’ve been recommending it to total strangers in Target. And now to everyone who reads my website. The Hunger Games is amazing.”

Here is a brief synopsis of The Hunger Games that was posted on Suzanne Collins site-

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place.

The Hunger Games can be purchased HERE. You can learn more about author Suzanne Collins and her other works HERE.
